``What does muslim in you say when you are eating pork chops? ``

The answer is ``mashallah, mashallah`` - right? Or is it a trick question?

(If it is a joke about Mr Urstruly I don`t think it`s funny, please apologise.)

What a relief! I thought it was just me...

``Now taking your question in earnest, according to a widely quoted study the average gay person(whatever that means) in America has more than 70 sexual partners in their lifetime. The number for a white guy is between 10 and 15. For white women its 4-10. Draw your own inferences.``

Bugger (!) the inferences, I want to know the stats for desis...

(Also, this white guy/woman are straight? Or is this the average?)

``...the pope is a Sikh.``

And why not? I think that`s a great idea. (``His Holiness, Santa Singh, here seen passing through Delhi`s Punjabi Bagh Extension II in the Pope Mobile...``)

Different person, different contract. Sorry.

Yes - India is great, tho just met some very nervous friends visiting Delhi from Ahmedabad, so I guess I must admit that it isn`t all unalloyed joy and light. Let me know how the book goes. Re: modern technology being harnessed in the service of the midieval, this just confirms my basic dislike of people. They are a bad lot, better to avoid them.

Reply Sadna, Rohini

Rohini, I had a similar opinion of Haryana - so progressive, all villages electrified, etc. etc. So is the country regressing in some ways?? I think, however, that it`s hard to draw conclusions about a state which is so demographically affected by Delhi. Meaning, my parents live in a suburb of Delhi which is in Haryana as far as the statistics go, but not in any real sociological sense. So is it Delhi which skews the ratio, or is it the gaons? Sadna, your insight into Haryanvi culture would be invaluable here...

{Change this story a little bit. What if the boy is muslim and he is marrying a hindu girl, who is converting to Islam. What would be you advice to her? what would be your advice to the boy? }

I would advise the woman to have the right to do fitna written into her marriage contract, also the right to intitiate divorce at will. I think she should have the bit about being paid for housework and breastfeeding spelled out too. Oh, and also she should get serious about meher - ie 40 rupees shouldn`t cut it.

``...that`s a familiar story...we all know how that cookie crumbles, so no need to ask...``

RSax? I think you should be more optimistic about this yaar.

Ansal`s Palam Vihar :-) and yes, thank you, I am.

Absolutely Hasanbhai, but till that happy day…(actually, I think that we should do this in Australia.)

I thought that you said I was too old to call you unkil Veereshji?? But yes please, I would be most honoured to meet you. I currently languish in my Ammi Huzoor`s custody in Palam Vihar, but kabhi kabhi parole bhi hotha hai. Please email me at zafreallyzaf@yahoo.com with a contact # if you feel up to it. (Perhaps add to the hamara yeh bahthar hai list - my fist suggestionis traffic.) Salaams.

Just some figures:

I`m currently in Haryana, and they tell me that the female:male ratio here is 6:10 - in fact people are now ``importing`` wives from poorer states - of course you can imagine the condition of a wife from elsewhere in a family which so pointedly devalues women...

This illustrates that it definitely ISN`T an issue of poverty, but of culture. Haryana is a rich state. (Also, btw, where Jhajjar is located - not so far from where I type.)

IMO we tend to blame a lot of things on poverty (extremism, sexism, communal violence, casteism, blahblahblah) when the real sources are a lot less comfortable to examine.

Gandhi, Godse and Geeta

Dost Mittarji - you are Nand Tandon? Mubarak, mubarak!

If I may make so bold:

``So, who was following the message of Geeta in the true sense? Gandhi, Godse or both?``

Truth kya cheez hai? You perceive it one way, I perceive it another, asli cheez tho kuchh aur hi hai. Meaning, clearly they both thought they were - and people who agree with Gandhi think HE was closer to the truth, ditto for those who agree with Godse, right?

``If both, should holy scriptures play a role in morality?``

I think one of the things that comes out of the Mahabharata is that holy scriptures can only play a role in PERSONAL morality. Both ``sides`` in the Mahabharata had people who were acting, according to their lights, dharmically - this didn`t mean that one side was dharmic or the other adharmic. (ie good people can disagree fundamentally and clash without either of their being amoral.)

Just MHO

Anyway, all - pranams from the homeland (or next door for some of you). (If anybody`s in Delhi and wants to have coffee and samosas I`m on zafreallyzaf@yahoo.com - it would be nice to see chowkistas in real life.)
