Black Pakistan and White Pakistan

Dost-mittar #459: You have made some astute observations, with which I will mostly have to agree:

``Most Pakistani chowkies, on the other hand, seem to come from a ``White Pakistan``...... Pakistani army, which is probably the most representative of the cross-section of the Pakistani society.``

This is definitely correct. I have noticed quite a bit more upward mobility amongst Indians. Also I have noticed quite a bit more mobility across genders amongst Indians. A lot of Indian women doing a lot of things........

In Pakistan, it is the White Pakistan Chowk crowd which dominates. I have tried to make this point on this site quite often. Nearly all Chowkies have extremely limited exposure to Black Pakistan. I, myself, only have it, because I was in the military, and lived with and in Black Pakistan.......I don`t think most Chowkies realize how much White Pakistan (us Chowk crowd) is disliked by Black Pakistan. If there ever was a revolution in Pakistan, I am quite convinced the Black Pakistan would not go after the Army or the maulvis. They would come after all of us on Chowk....

The Army is, no doubt, the only institution, which allows Black Pakistan the mobility to move into White Pakistan. Many of the future Generals will be from Black Pakistan. Which is why the Army isn`t hated amongst the middle and lower middle classes of Pakistan, despite the Martial Laws. It is only disliked in the White Pakistan. For the simple reason that the Army is from the middle and lower middle class. The taxi-driver and juicewalla and the peasant farmer doesn`t rise up agaisnt the Army, not because he likes Martial Law, but because his own son is a Captain, who could become a General someday.........His son can become Musharraf someday. However, there is very little chance his son can ever become Zardari or Nawaz Sharif.............

```` Wear a Suit but use a Lota? Study Anthropology but pray to Allah? Isn’t it ok to work at Microsoft and bitch about the US invasion of Iraq? To go along with colleagues to a bar yet not drink? Not to pray, yet to celebrate Eid? Do we have to test the fault lines, the deeper contradictions between Black Pakistan and White Pakistan? Must we all become White? Or Black? Isn’t it ok to be gray?``
Did you have Roamir in mind? :-) ``
Hmm........Actually to tell you the truth, that does describe me to an extent. Or what I try to be. Other than the working at Microsoft and bitching about USA. I think if a Pakistani is going to migrate to work at Microsoft, then he loses the right to bitch about the USA. Which is why I moved............
I have an awful lot of faith in Black Pakistan. Which is why I am always more optimistic about Pakistan, than most. Look at the reaction to the earthquake. Wasn`t I, one of few, who had always argued that the lower ranks of the Army will deliver, as will the lower ranks of the Pakistani society.
The only way to, ``wear a suit and use a lota`` is if one has an opportunity to live amongst the lota crowd. No one on Chowk has that opportunity. There is very little social integration in Pakistan. How many people on Chowk have lived in Rajinpur and Chakoti and Lasbela etc. for extended periods of time. How many have worked in professions, which are now dominated by Black Pakistan. Hardly any, if any. Most are limited to the upper class Suzuki to Pajero crowds of Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi and New York.
Which brings me back to my original thesis: Us Chowk crowd are viewed as part of the problem by Black Pakistan. Not part of the solution. Though all of us, for some strange reasons, view ourselves as revolutionaries, fighting for the common Pakistani. Not realizing that the common Pakistani hates our guts, as we look at him from our air-conditioned houses and cars...........
All the institutionns in Pakistan that remain elitist and do not allow Black Pakistan into positions of power, will always remain weak............This is why this website will remain limited and weak, also. Because it does not cater to Black Pakistan.............
The enemy forces are in complete disarray. The battlefields are filled with bloodied bodies of the injured. The Indian brigade on this site, having spent years, practicing the defence of their right flank, has been completely surprised by the attack from Pakistan`s left flank.
And there are sugarcanes everywhere................
Like Antonio Bendares in The Legend of Zorro, Behram has single-handedly raised his sugarcane and bloodied the Akhund Baharat brigade. Like Keanu ``Neo`` Reeves in the Meeting the Oracle scene from Matrix Reloaded, he has swung the sugarcane pole as an infinite line computer programmed RSS zombies, attacked him from all direction..........Leaving them all in a pile of dust..........Like Yoda in the Star Wars III, Behram has thrust his Light Sabre, and left the army of Indian Storm Troopers with sugarcanes sticking out from where the sun doesn`t shine.........
It was swift. It was bloody. And it was brutal. The Pakistani hole-seaking sugarcane missile finding its target again and again. I had always wondered what good all these ganna fields ever did for Pakistan. ``Why can`t we switch to Splenda`` I always thought? Now I know. Now I think we need to grow some more of these. Perhaps 1.1 billion more.............
P.S. News Flash: Pakistan to change names of its nuclear missiles, from Ghazi and Ghaznavi, to Sugarcane 1 and Sugarcane II.
Hmmm.......for some reason, when the non-Muslim Pakistanis take on the Indian brigade on this site, it seems to have more affect. I would like to invite Ijaz_gul to join in. And ana (though I am not sure whose side she will be on). And where is Patrick Masih, when you need him........
Whom else do we have, in our troops? I think that about covers all the non-Muslim Pakistanis. What about Sattar2 and Rizwan and Xainab(?)? Can we consider them non-Muslim, for this debate? The more, the merrier...........
And SameerJB was an athiest at one time. And is now a Bhudhist (though he is another one of those guys, who maybe on the other side).........And hamid mian is an athiest(?) who spends disproportionately large amounts of time at the mosque and in Islamic functions (luckily he, unlike Sameer, is on the right side)........
I think the Indian brigade has been caught completely off-gaurd by the this combined assault of the Parsee-Christian battalion from Pakistan. It had trained its defences against the generic Muslim attacks.........One can sense the confusion in the ranks, the dispersal in the logistic lines and the utter mayhem in the strategic planning amongst our Indian colleagues, as they try to unsuccessfully regroup to handle this suprising assault..........
P.S. The references to sugarcanes is very potent. As someone who, once, in his innocent youth, tried to take a leak in a sugarcane field; it can be a dangerous experience.........
hamidm mian #218: ``........... the only things they have over there that are worth talking about, are the strip joints and tim horton`s ..........``
You forgot the great Chowk poet-in-residence and the next T.S Elliot, temporal. Not to mention Chowk Staff, herself, who lives in Canada. As well as the great Indian military strategician, Dost-mittar........And of course, Pamela Anderson (though she is temporarily in USA, on leave).....
Since I maybe the only person on this site, who is familiar, intimately, with USA and Canada, I can safely say, the later is a better place for Pakistanis. I gave up one of the most coveted documents in the world - a US passport. I also took a 25% pay cut. And sold my house, which is now worth $220,000 more than what I sold it for. Yet I have never regretted it (sidenote: that is not completely true. I do regret selling the house, on a daily basis)..........
Following are the reasons that I think Canada is better for Pakistanis (assuming they can get a job):
- Pakistanis are becoming MNAs (and should be inline for ministerships, soon)
- 9 Punjabis in the Federal house
- Punjabi is a recognized second language
- Canada has a budget surplus, for as far out as possibly predictable
- The Canadian dollar will be 1-1 with the USA dollar, shortly
- Ontario now makes more cars than Michigan
- More lakes and streams than the rest of the world combined
- More oil deposits than Saudi Arabia
- No chance of being drafted and sent to Iraq
- Almost free college education
- Very good unemployment benefits
- Extremely low crime (the Pakistani-centric city of Mississauga is the safest city in North America)
- Very good race relations
- One can wear a shalwar qameez or dhoti outside and no gora takes a second look
- Pakistanis starting to turn into a minor political force
- No Ralph Reid and his Evangelicals
- No Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage, and Bill O`Rielly
- NO GEORGE BUSH
- NO JEB BUSH (in waiting)
and most of all (drumroll please.................)
- Topless sunbathing on the sidewalks legal (in Quebec)
``If 70% of Pakistan is Black, then I am pround to live in the darkest corner of them all.
Cheerios``
If Behram`s comments were the heavy artillery, then the above comment would have to be the nuclear strike. Pakistanis seem to be out here, will all guns blazing. Including Parsi and Christian Pakistanis.......
While it is a bit difficult to be impartial, I would have to say so far the score is:
Pakistan 3
India 1
I think it is about time, India called in its heavy artillery..........
hamidm mian #196: ``....... i don`t expect you to understand this, but all republicans are not southern baptists and all democrats are not atheists !................. i am sure this is a little confusing in your neat little black and white world ............ ``
It`s not a question of Black or White. Its a question of people who are Black one day and White the next. I cannot, today, denounce Jamaat-i-Islami and then go and vote for Qazi Hussain, the next day.........I am sure I could find some things in the Jamaat with which I could agree. For example, JI is pro-life, as am I. But as long as Qazi Sahib is their candidate, I disagree........
I am not a Democrat. I was never a US citizen, so I could not vote. But if I could have voted, I would have been a Colin Powell type Republican. However, having seen the Evangelicals and the, ``fifty million stong southern baptist`` take over the Republican party, completely, to the point that they have kicked out the few sane individuals they have (like Colin Powell), I would have dumped the Republican party. A party is nothing more than its current agenda and leadership. Not its historical agenda. Doesn`t mean I would have become a Democrat. Maybe a Liberatarian. Or a supporter of Jessie ``the body`` Ventura, or an independent..........
Having said that, my agenda on this site, or otherwise, has never been to solely go against those pushing religion. I think there are good and bad everywhere. However, your agenda, from day one, has been to be against anyone pushing religion, in any form. If I understand your comments correctly, you consider religion to be the source of all evil in the world. Specifically politicized religion.
To some extent I always agreed with you, and to some extent I disagreed. But I can respect the views of people, if they stick with one principle. Much like I can respect the views of Urstruly (while I disagree with him), if he moves back to Pakistan, and stops living in the USA. At that point, he can consider the USA the Great Satan, if he wants. But I cannot respect his views, if he contradicts himself by living in the belly of what he considers the Great Satan. Similarly, if you push anti-religionism as your core argument, I can respect it. As long as you are not the first to vote inline with the same Baptists, whom you despise........
One cannot despise the Baptists, yet assist in keeping them in power, in any form or manner........Voting for George Bush and his Christian Conservative agenda, while simultaneously denouncing them, doesn`t make sense......How is that any different than Urstruly despising the USA, yet paying taxes to the govt. of Illinois?
hamidm mian #194: ``the fifty million stong southern baptist convention which has gone on record to declare that their god is bigger and badder ........... and of course, there is always the papacy which has a criminal record that goes back to gregory vii -``
Would it be correct to assume that you no longer support these guys? Can we assume that you have finally seen the light and are no longer going to vote in line with the Evangelists and the Christian Conservatives. Many of us have been trying to convince you, quite unsuccessfully, to not support these indivduals, and their poster child, George Bush. Yet have found you to be amongst their (and his) staunchest supporters..........
If not, then your comments, and love-hate relationship with these guys is getting more confusing by the day...............
soysauce #91: ``Indeed why are eastern nations (rich or poor) obsessed with how they fare in western opinion?``
Very valid point............
I think it is a sign of inferiority complex. Gora Sahib is still gora sahib. India and Pakistanis still have more faith in goras successfully handling their cricket teams, than desis. Bangladesha and Sri Lanka are the same...........
For all the talk of Indian and/or Pakistani cuisine in the West, I have yet to see any Westerner show any interest in wearing a dhoti, lungi, shalwar kameez, rampuri cap, choridar pajama and kurta etc. While the South Asian upperclass cannot get enough of torn jeans, bandanas, fake American accents, sweatshirts that display Polo or Nike in bold letters, and speaking English to people who can understand Urdu Hindi Punjabi etc.
Infact, I have never been able to figure out why my nieces and nephews are taught Snow White and Romeo and Juliet in school and not Heer Ranjha and Sassi Punnu....And why are they taught Shakespeare and not Bulleh Shah and Sachal Sarmast..........
I think as countries grow economically, they become more confident, and start returning to their cultural roots. Ireland, now, ranks amongst the highest in HDI in Europe, and has a higher per capita income than Germany, UK, France etc. Perhaps that is why they are rediscovering Gallic..........
Kulharee #41``The way I see it, there are only two feasible outcomes: One is complete separation of all provinces, with a little piece of Karachi (say Laloo Kheet) reserved for Mohajirs as their own country, where they can speak their own language and have their own culture and TV dramas. The second (and more favorable) is to unite back with mother India. Which one you favor?``
I would like to encourage you to lead the, ``Let`s separate or rejoin India rally,`` in Lahore or Peshawar or Karachi, if you feel so strongly about the idea. And see what happens........My guess is you might save your underwear, but will not save much else........
You have a right to your opinion. As long as you accept other`s opinion. I don`t prefer either option. I am pretty happy where I am. I would, personally, like to see Kashmir get its right of self-determination and go where its people want it to go (India, Pakistan, indepdendent). Then Indian Punjab and Kashmir and Pakistan Punjab and Kashmir completely drop their borders, and share their common culture.............That is all I need.......
You can take a vote in Pakistan to see how many want it to break up or to join India.......My guess is hardly any...............And I don`t think too many Indians would want another 150 million Muslims in their borders. They seem to have their hands full figuring out how to deal with the 145 million Muslims that they currently have...........
Do keep in mind that even Bangladesh did not merge back with India. Did it? It would have been the prime candidate for merging back with India. In fact, Indians in Assam and Bengal are fighting hard to keep Bangladeshis out of India. And the Indian and Bangladeshi Armies are in military skirmishes on the India/Bangladesh border..........
Kulharee #41: ``India has been very successful in promoting its culture (often times calling Pakistani culture as its own – look at all the Indian restaurants``
Hmm....so what you are stating is that Indian restaurants = Indian culture. And that too, even if they serve Pakistani food. Indian or Pakistani restaurants are nothing more than an off-shoot of the South Asian diaspora, i.e if South Asians migrate to some place, they will require their own food, movies, music etc. The only place where South Asian restaurants have made inroads, beyond the diaspora, is UK. That`s about it. Other than that you won`t see too many Indian restaraunts in areas without a diaspora........
But surely there is more to spread culture than Indian restaurants selling Pakistani food, in UK......The spread of culture is Indians wearing jeans and polo shirts and saying whatsupp and chill chill in their songs, even though not a single gora migrates to South Asia..........Or South Asians listening to Michael Jackson and Madonna, even though neither has anything common with South Asians.........
``as you argue, that the creation of Pakistan was an economic based Ideology, at what point, do you believe that Pakistan should merge with India? Considering that all the economic issues are addressed and resolved.``
All creations of all nations are socially and economically based. One group thinks it is being discriminated against, and thus separates. Its like saying if all economic issues between India and British empire have been resolved, should India rejoin the British Empire? How many Indians would agree.......
And how exactly have all economic issues been resolved with India? To get clear answers to this question, you will have to compare the social and economic security of the average Indian Muslim with that of an average Pakistani. If that of an average Indian Muslim becomes significantly more secure economically and socially than that of the average Pakistani, the merger will automatically occur. Punjab, Sind etc. will try to break away from Pakistan, and move towards India in such a case. Much like Bangladesh did. I don`t see that happening at the moment.........
Jay #39: Pakistan has the nuclear option, for one and only one reason: as a deterence against India. It is only the nuclear option that kept India from invading Pakistan, during the recent pile-up of Indian forces on the border. It was, in fact, the first incidence in Indo-Pak history, where India actually retreated after piling up all its forces on the Pakistan border...........So the nuclear option does serve some purpose...........
As for culture, it is correct that Pakistan has not been able to promote much of it. But that is true for all poor countries. India hasn`t been able to promote much. Unless you consider Bollywood to be culture. Neither has Bangladesh, nor Sri Lanka, nor Afghanistan. In fact, the only country that is producing some true cultural classics, in the region, is Iran........
There are very few, ``takers`` for South Asian culture anywhere in the world. The only reason for whatever success it has had, is because South Asian (especially India) has a huge diaspora, which has created somewhat of a demand. On the whole, South Asia actually absorbs Western culture, far more. I think India sits at the forefront of this. I have started seeing Indian music, movies, fashion become more and more Americanized.......
Poor countries, and poor people, tend to be more worried about food and clothes. Not culture. That is a luxury, for them...............
kulharee #14: ``he has no clue as to how to fight Allah MiaN in Pakistan, the main culprit behind a Red and Blue Pakistan.......Pakistan is a Yugoslavia in waiting.``
This analysis is partially correct, though mostly incorrect..........
1. Pakistanis are actually quite comfortable with where Allah Mian sits in their lives. You would not be able to tell that from the Urdu and English media, though. The Urdu media pushes an Islamic Orthodoxy`s point of view. While the English media pushes a Western Secularism point of view. This site does the same. To push such views, one has to show a situation where the society is in danger. The Urdu media highlights that Islam is in danger of disappearing. While the English media highlights that Pakistan will be Talibinised within a few years. They have to create these fears, to push their ideas. But their respective views are not representative of the average Pakistanis, who are neither secular nor orthodox in their beliefs. Hence Allah Mian has never been a problem in Pakistan..........at least not nearly as big as this site and the Urdu/English media make Him out to be........
The only people in Pakistan, for whom Allah Mian has been a problem, at the social level, are Ahmedis.......
2. East Pakistan and West Pakistan were like Yugoslavia. Infact worst, and were bound to break up. It was an unnatural union. However, West Pakistan is a relatively natural union. A more natural union than, say, the surrounding countries of Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, India and China (though not Iran). In this sense it is quite a bit different from Yugoslavia.
For something to break up, the economic and social advantages of breaking up have to outweigh the advantages of sticking together, for the provinces. This is why Pakistan broke away from India. The Muslims concluded that they would be economically better off separately........This is why Bangladesh broke away from Pakistan......This is why Kashmir is trying to break away from India........This is why the Sikhs broke away from West Punjab.......This is why Croatia etc. broke away from the Serbs..........
Groups don`t simply break away because of religion or ethnicity............They break away if they feel a loss in economic and social growth due to their religion and ethnicity........For example, if Ahmedis ever broke away from Pakistan, they would not do so, simply, because they were Ahmedis. They would do so, if they felt economic and social insecurity, due to their being Ahmedis..............
In Pakistan, other than the Muhajir community, I cannot see any major community in Pakistan who could be better off separately. Pathans in Pakistan are far better off than Pathans in Afghanistan. Infact Afghanis migrate to Pakistan and don`t want to go back. Kashmiris in Pakistan are far better off than Kashmiris in India. In fact, Indian Kashmiris are fighting to separate from India. Pakistani Punjabis are basically running Pakistan, and have more influence in Pakistan that Indian Punjabis have in India. Even Pakistani Muhajirs are significantly better off than their Muslim cousins in India. The former being the richest group in Pakistan. The later being amongst the poorest group in India.......Pakistani Baluchis are heavily subsidized by the govt. of Pakistan. Hence they cannot separate. They would starve. Sindh to a great deal is the same (other than Muhajirs.)
All these groups, breaking off from Pakistan would be as silly as Delhiites breaking off from India, or Gujrat breaking off from India, i.e. they are better off united then any other option they have. How would Pakistan Punjab survive by itself? It would have to merge with Indian Punjab........
So the only group that could separate is an idependent Karachi, which could be like Singapore. Though, for it to survive, it would need friendly relations and trade with the surrounding Pakistan, which it would not get........
In addition to economic interdependency, the Pakistan society is religiously relatively homogneous. 97% of it is Muslim, with no social differences in its two major sects. Over time, there has been a lot of social interaction, as well. Kashmiris and Muhajirs are about as two different groups - geographically and socially - as you will find in Pakistan. Yet the biggest social and financial support during this earthquake for Kashmiris/Hazara came from Karachi! Karachi, alone may have outdone, the rest of Pakistan........
In addition, from Sind, through the Saraiki speaking areas, to Punjab and into Kashmir, the social makeup has a long history of a very Sufiana type of society. This is quite well-entreched into the social system.
The only area, where I see a similarity with Yugoslavia (and USSR) is the fact that Pakistan is now the only county in the world, where the population of one province, Punjab, is greater than the combined population of the rest of the provinces. USSR and Yugoslavia were quite similar along those lines. And Serbian and Russian domination, broke them up..........To an extent, Punjabi domination broke away Bangladesh, as well. And much of the resentment amongst Pakistan smaller provinces is against Punjab. It is not against Pakistan...........Infact, Muhajirs and Sindhis and Baluchis(?) and definitely Bengalis, accepted the idea of Pakistan, before Punjabis did.............
I think this article represents the author`s personal views, moreso than the reality..........For example, I don`t think expat`s hide their Pakistani identity. At least, not anyone I hang around with. People ask me all the time, and I tell them. And no one has any issues with it.......
The dividing line in Pakistan is between the economic haves and have-nots. There really isn`t any other major dividing line. The rest have been created for political advantages. There isn`t one between secularism and orthodoxy - both being foreign concepts to Pakistan. There isn`t one between Shias and Sunnis - other than in tiny little groups. There isn`t one between the average military person and the civilian - both belonging to the very middle and lower middle class of Pakistan......
It is the economic have-nots that never get a chance to say their word. They don`t get it through politics because of feudalism. They don`t get it through religion, because of the domination of the discourse by the orthodoxy and those representing western secularism. They don`t get it economically, because they are poor........
Chowk, itself, would have a completely different discourse if it were accessible to a majority of Pakistan. Even if we set aside the illiterate Pakistan, even if the remaining 40% literate crowd could participate here, the discussions would go in completely different directions........
The Black Pakistan is the rich and empowered Pakistan - doesn`t matter what ethnicity, profession, ideolgical mindset it belongs to. All of us on Chowk are part of this Pakistan. The White Pakistan is the poor Pakistan - people who are dependent on all of us more affluent people, and who have been let down by all of us...........
So the two qualities Pakistan needs are the ability to reduce poverty - doesn`t matter who does it, the military, the civilian or anyone. And the ability of the affluent group to accept blame and criticize itself, as a complete group............not only criticize sub-groups within this group.........
In that sense, Chowk itself, is a debating society for the Black Pakistan. Perhaps, as a first step, we should, somehow make Chowk accessible to the rest of Pakistan. Perhaps an Urdu section, with Urdu fonts should be introduced.........
Dost-mittar #151: I would tend to agree.......
The tsunami hit multiple countries. Just Indonesia and India, alone, have larger populations than Paksitan. Hence they have more people out in the world to mobilize. For example, the company I was working with had an Indian CEO, so he immediately mobilized funds........
The tsunami resulted in a much larger number of deaths. 220,000 of them. That had a huge impact also.......
In addition, the tsunami hit some countries, like Sri Lanka, which are tiny. And thus desparetely needed the world`s help.......
And, I think the tsunami was the first major incident that the world turned to. There was an earthquake in Iran, but Iran doesn`t get much press. Since the tsunami, people have started getting donor fatigue........
Countries aren`t too sure, how honestly the money will be used by the Pakistan govt. In addition, they may be looking at how much of its own budget re-allocation Pakistan will do. I think the cancellation of the F-16 deal will go a long way in convincing the other countries, in giving more aid..........
I also think when Musharraf, personally, starts asking at donor`s conferences, he will get a response. Musharraf, is a very popular figure in the West. Perhaps the most popular Muslim in the West. The West has a hell of a lot invested in him, personally. Specifically the USA. And now Israel, also. When he asks, I think they will listen.........
Faisaluno #: I think your comments bear merit, in general. Though I don`t know Asma Jenhangir personally, hence I cannot comment whether they bear merit, specifically, in her case.
There are so many prominent people in Pakistan, who are philanthrapists and activists. I have slowly started getting a chance to get introduced to them. This is primarily why I have been more optimistic on Pakistan, than most on this site. And this is why I have generally known that Pakistanis will deliver, when a crisis comes. Which they have. I was one of the few persons who wasn`t overly surprised at the Pakistani reaction to this earthquake. Nor was I surprised at the dedication with which the Army jawans and officers have worked day and night.......
There are so many philanthrapists and activists who are doing so much work that it is truly unbelievable. In addition, there are so many people in Pakistan who give money to causes.
Yet no one knows who they are. They are invisible to the public.
This is how it should be. One should do good work from the background. The moment one starts publicizing it, or starts publicizing one`s self, one can go off-track. One ends up getting celebrity status and that can be addictive. CNN, BBC, USA, PTV come calling and all of a sudden, one moves from one`s original cause towards being a media hog.
This is specifically true for people who don`t do anything. And are just verbal activists and critics. The Pakistani press is filled with people like this. In fact, for all the media attention they get, I have yet to figure out what people like Hamid Gul and Pervez Hoodbhoy have done in Pakistan; other than their 9-5 jobs..........Yet they get so much press time.........However, can anyone name any members of the huge Citizens Foundation organization. In fact, other than Edhi, himself, and his wife, can anyone name anyone from the Edhi organization. Or from Imran Khan`s hospital............
