Romair,

Pakistani neutrality on gwot makes sense, from Pakistan's pov.

But on a practical basis, how is this possible?

If Spain was harboring Taliban & Al-Qeeda, if their leaders were seen in Madrid & Barcelona? do you think Spain could "declare" neutrality?

How the heck can you say you're neutral when the "bad guys" are in your country?

Big bad America- democrat or republican will never allow it. There are numerous ways the US & Western allies can make Pakistan's life miserable. Are you willing to pay that price?

Romair,

Your suggestion that Pakistan should declare neutrality on gwot makes sense--in theory..

How do you propose to do it in practice?

-should Pak allow Nato troops to attack Waziristan? If you claim its integral territory, you cant claim neutrality..

-what about the Al-Qeeda & Taliban leadership who take refuge in the big cities? As long a the jihadis are using Pakistan as a launch platform--it is impossible to claim neutrality.

-US can hurt Pakistan more than just cutting of aid..it can tilt more to India, militarily---& that always scares the bejesus of your military...remember, after 911, Mushy quickly asked India to "LAY OFF"..this john is mine.

tahmed,

{US sanctions that had crippled Pakistan in the 1990's were lifted.}

The sanctions were lifted after 911. Before that Mushy was a pariah & the Pak economy was languishing.

tahmed,

your sequence of events are right. However, I diagree with you re your conclusions.

RAW, despite all its criticism, was aware that Pak had the bomb.Heck, AQ Khan openly boasted about it.

So the BJP was well aware that Pak had the bomb. So, why up the ante? I think they wanted to bring it out in the open. I think they figured that sanctions would hurt Pakistan more than India.

In fact, between the testing & Pakistan's decision to give a "fitting response", India was quickly getting lot of international condemnation. India would have been in real deep trouble if Pakistan did not respond. Hence, George Fernandez upped the ante.

In hindsight, if this issue wasnt in the forefront, I dont think AQ khan would have been exposed for running a nuclear Wal-Mart.

Romair,

C'man yaar. Hamid's forte is his inimitable cynical wit.He "ridicules" everybody, including himself. He also readily reverses himself.

OTOH, Urstruly comes across as a bitter, venomous person, disillusioned with everyone's morality, except those who agree with his brand of Islam.

Its not the fact that he is a holier-than-thou bigot which bothers me--that type is represented by all religions on Chowk.

To the best of my knowlege, he is single, an engineer, who is disillusioned by the land that feeds him, disillusioned by muslims who support the west, looks upon non-muslims as morally defunct, acts like a victim and espouses violent revolution.

One can find a number of reasons why hamid should live in the US. Heck, he fits right in!
Can you tell me one logical reason why a profile like Urstruly would want to live in the US?

This article is about muslims massacring muslims.

Here is Urstruly telling the victims...you signed up for it, you got your blood money, quit whining....

Then the bugger has the audacity of sermonising Qaidianis & hindus!

Why would somebody live in the US & viscerally hate it & refuse to leave it? Its not money, the middle east pays engineers very well. Theres got to be a reason...unless someone can give me another logical reason, Urstruly is an Al-Qeeda mole living in our midst.

(most of them do have moral values but those are no better
than the moral values of a tree toad.)

Pakistanis are 90%+ Muslim...
lemme see, by that logic ,Pakistan should be one of the most morally chaste & enlightened country in the world.

Compared to us idol worshipers, have their actions been more moral than ours?

They rank lower in the corruption index than Indians, they have killed more muslims than Indians have, their crime rates are worse than ours, their leaders have looted their country.

During the 60 yrs of independence they have committed a genocide, fought 2 civil wars, cant agree on a constitution, their military has killed more Pakistanis than Indians have..I can go on & on..

They shout about Islam from the rooftops, wear their religion on their sleeves, pray to Allah 5 times a day...& THIS is what they have to show for their piety?!

The icing on the cake is that we are "judged" by a SOB who lives in the US & curses it everyday, but refuses to leave it. Talk about being a besharam! Why should an engineer live in the US & viscerally hate it? The only reason I can come up with is that he is part of an Al Qeeda cell, waiting for orders to strike..

Actions speak louder than words. I'd rather have the morals of a tree toad, than be a human being like that...I'm just glad that I don't have to share an eternity of after life with people like this...

Romair,

Thanks! So you do admit Indians are smarter than Pakistanis.

Tsk tsk..Well, you had all the advantages--fertile lands, good looks, marital races, no caste system ,Islam the great cohesive factor, Jinnah, countless brother countries who you can go crying to, sugar daddies like the US & China...

all this... & yet you have lost every war you fought, your military is reviled by your own people, more corrupt than India...your leaders have looted your country blind & now mr 10% will get that chance again......you have/& are still fighting full scale civil war...your constitution is a joke...

yeah..yeah we are butt ugly...yet..tourists from all over the world are coming in increasing numbers, the economy booms without relying on handouts from sugar daddies..

its no wonder that Pakis are SHOUTING to the point of being more racist than the goras of yore; how much better looking they are. Yet you cover them gals in those shuttlecocks & we get Miss Universes...

masadi,

since you are an expert; how would you change policy, hypothetically, if you were the President of Pakistan?

Romair,
re #56

India isnt harboring AlQeeda & Taleban leaders. Pakistan is. Pakistan is involved, how the heck can you be "neutral"?!

If Pakistan says, we dont want to be involved, the US will have no choice but to comit their troops into Pakistan.

Just how the heck are you going to sell "neutrality" to the yanks?

US Conspiracy to Destablize Pakistan?

Has anybody considered what could happen to Pakistan if they told the US to f off?! "Bombing into the stone age" is only a last option.

-the US could cut off all aid (1 billion a yr is a huge chunk of change, esp if most of it goes to the military).

-the US could impose a trade embargo. Iran & Saddam can afford an embargo because they have oil revenues. Pakistan doesn't.

-the US could ally themselves with India. India is one of the few countries in the world , opinion polls show, that likes the US.
That would only worsen the sense of insecurity vis a vis India, that is pounded into every Pakistani.

You guys can wring your hands & lament why the US is a bad friend to have. But the US as an enemy will be 10 times worse.
