And Dr. Shahid Hussain Bokhari Quits…

Dear kulharee,

Please enlighten us. Did you use to interact on this site under a different id? And since you make it a point to disclose your affiliation with a minority, maybe you`d also like to come out of the closet?

Shades of Grey

HP is right in fuming about this gibberish. Instead of any incisive look at Faiz it is proof positive that physicians are incapable of thinking beyond black and white. The author asks the following questions:

``I am however, perplexed by certain inconsistencies in Faiz’s life. Firstly, how did a kid growing up in Sialkot and memorizing the Quran eventually become a socialist?

Secondly, why did a man who rose to the rank of Leutinent Colonel under the British Raj choose to be at odds with his own government?

Thirdly, how could a person accept Lenin Award defying the national spirit of the time when relationship between the U.S.S.R. and Pakistan was cold at best?``

Lets ask the erstwwhile doctor the following questions in return.

Why is it that in two people exposed to the HIV virus in exactly the same manner, one develops full blown AIDS while the other does not?

Why is it that the Prophet who couldn`t allegedly read or write direct his followers to seek learning even if they had to go to China?

And finally why is the sky blue?

No Burial for Balakot

re Field Marshal #10:

``Another thing that should be highlighted is that it is the job of every govt. servant to aid in the earthquake. Not just the Army`s. It is every govt. servant`s side job. If someone is a professor employed by the govt., it is their duty, as much as it is the Army officers, to be there. They should not, all, turn into reporters........``

All the harsh winters in Canuck land haven`t gotten this pithu parade robot to think straight. Just call the popularity hungry Professor when the lights go out, the plants need watering or when the horrible Injuns lob a few grenades across the LOC.

re faisaluno #22:

``unlike likes of hoodbhoy and asma jehangir, people who make a difference never seek publicity. couple of my pakistani investment banking acquaintences have raised tens of millions of rupees from their firms. i can guarantee you will not see their names in the press.``

Investment banks have programs setup to match charity donations made by their employees and in most cases they create special funds for particularly tragic situations also. It doesn`t require more than a phone call or e-mail to a couple of people to get the firms to setup those funds. Instead of trying to figure out the intentions of others, it would probably be better if you really got that Bloomberg terminal working. The guys who make the real money would really appreciate it.

Amway. Conway?

re urstruly #15:

That`s because you don`t get out much with your wrist being your best and probably only friend.

In NYC Pakistanis are deep into this scam. There is an online version of Amway called Quixtar which is the rage amongst Pakistanis in Queens and Brooklyn. I would say maybe 20% of families in these neighborhoods are involved. I was told that more than 20 buses last month were hired to transport these crazies from one neighborhood in Queens to Richmond(VA) which is their Mecca.

I hope your hopes about the 92 people are realized. Most people who can make a difference find a way to get out of the 5 year bond.

Why We Need Islamization of Science
Posted by sac Feb 25, 2005 11:41 am
There is a giant body of work out there written in the same vein as this article that tries to come to terms with entirely bullshit topics. These posts follow a very familiar pattern. It goes something like this.
1)Start by defining a word from the dictionary and expnading by delving into latin/arabic/Esperanto roots etc.
2)Recap mainstream thinking in a paragraph or two conveniently leaving out the nuances of the subject. This is done to give the impression that the writer has complete command of the topic at hand.
3)Use a combination of 1 and 2 to argue that mainstream thinking is a load of crap and not worthy of any attention.
4)Present alternative thesis in response to 3 notwithstanding the fact that their thesis is even more bogus than mainstream thinking. Heavy artillery in the form of verbiage and circular logic is employed in this stage to pummel the reader into a stage of intellectual submission.
5)The alternative thesis has to be vague and harmless in order not to invite ridicule or dissention.
6)End result. A lot of hot air signifying nothing.

I invite readers to apply this cheat sheet to posts by urstruly, echoboom,ROmair etc. Results will be truly illuminating.

Night of Henna in San Francisco
Posted by sac Feb 16, 2005 07:20 am
Mr. Zee wants to enjoy all the bounty of San Francisco. I say all power to him. Top or Bottom, doesn`t matter. Making false statements about his country to keep the gravy train going is declasse. And knowing friends amongst the brilliant ``Chowk Staff`` is always good for a grand or two.

The Idea of Chowk
Posted by sac Jan 24, 2005 12:56 pm
This is the typical response of a decision taken by a commitee. A whole elaborate structure with so many holes that it will either finish off Chowk`s remaining readership of 31 or spread creation of multiple nicks like wildfire. I bet it will be discarded within 2 weeks.

Systems have to be simple and need not be too flexible in order to be popular. Why not just ban IP addresses that breach Chowk guidelines and be done with it?

re tahmed32 #88:

I have no beef with your painting of the larger picture. I merely wanted to point out a chink in the American armor. Only by acknowledging and criticizing it can we hope to move the discussion forward. The American government will be forced to spend more money in aid as the common American just like a common man anywhere else in the world will show that he cares and the powers that be will be forced to listen to public opinion.
We can put aside the debates related to how that public opinion is manipulated and moulded to suit ones purposes.

re tAhmed#81:

The US contributes less than one quarter of one percentage point of its budget to foreign aid. And it contributes less than half the development aid contributed by the EU.
Whether these numbers are justified or not is upto personal viewpoints. I just marvel at the hypocricy when European countries are chided for not paying their ``share`` of reconstruction aid required for Afghanistan or when they are derided for not forgiving Iraq`s debts owed to them.
The sheer audacity with with Powell and Bush tried to contradict the UN official`s statement speaks volumes about the moral bankruptcy of the ruling elite in this country.

Would you like to venture a guess as to the percentage of US budget that goes towards foreign aid? And if you are really adventurous compare that with the EU?

Remembering Maqbool Butt

stuka:

The situtation with Kashmir is like the tobacco industry quagmire in which Pakistan can be compared to the trial lawyers and India to Philip Morris. India can pay the trial lawyers to go away or it can continue to hope that it continues winning in court cases and its enormous heft in political and economic lobbies allows it to keep a favorable legal profile.

India`s shareholders have to somehow realize that if the lawsuits go away, they are sitting on a goldmine. Easier said than done. I am glad you guys have to suffer the fools of the likes of arjun_m and not us. But then we have to deal with fools of a different variety :)

stuka #177:

Your feeling that India is fine with the status quo is misplaced. If India wishes to be considered a viable economic power with commensurate political power, it needs to come to a resolution on Kashmir. It is entirely acceptable to create a firm in a garage and do away with formal titles if you are a startup, however to be taken seriously, at some point in time you have to let the grey hairs in and start wearing a suit.

Pakistan is paying a huge price for its fascination with Kashmir but the price for India is not trivial either. Unlike the politicians or the common Indian, the Indian businessman understands that reality. Just like the Indian economic well being has happened despite the Indian Government, any solution to Kashmir is more likely to come from imperatives driven by economic realities rather than the likes of Natwar Singh and Co.
