Earthquake Relief Efforts

Re: # 33

Well said. In my world too it is lunacy. But what can one do? I remember at the time of the Gujarat earthquake a few years ago a plane load of life saving aid supplies from Pakistan just stood there because our Indian authorities refused to accept/clear the aid supplies. It was allowed, I think, after four or five days to unload. A full 96 t0 120 hours lapsed between their offer and our acceptance as if the blankets, tents and medicines would write [intelligence] back home! Now I ask you!!

Lunacy? You bet. But what can we do?
Hey, human lives first and politics later!!

[What if the Americans had brokered that one too? It`s scary.]

Re: # 18

[#s 13, 16, 18, 30 etc]

The following are going to `cost` as close to zero as possible in `overhead` and administration. The only other alternative is to send your funds to your trusted friends and colleagues. I have noticed an overflow of `honesty` and zeal since last four days. I hope it is self sustainable. One or two people I know are already in the field as volunteers and doing the `zero` overhead transfer of funds.

Edge #1 is right. For him/her indeed ``its business as usual``. Read on! Don`t believe it? Read #2!!

Isn`t it refereshing though that such edges are only in ones or twos out there? And they will smell soon too, the coffee.

National tragedies of this nature seem to have a positive function of bringing together many otherwise disparate and divergent groups often at conflict in a society.

I am glad to read that such movements are in evidence and at a very copious and extensive level. One hopes and prays for their permanence in our society.

The level of response so far is encouraging. I hope that the financial response is just as good.

About me? I have done my part, I think.

More power to you all. We who have became aliens to that history and geography eons ago can only wish you more power while we do whatever we can in our feeble way!

RS, they will; they did. I have very long experience with them, of these matters.

They do raise their eyebrows and then some! If you are not aware of it then either your experience is limited or you have been incredibly fortunate where you worked and/or lived. Perhaps the type of your work experience has not been relevant to hiring etc., since your statement seems to be more ``theoretical`` than predicated on experiential observation.

So, you fell for this trap too!
The Pakistani establishment worked overtime to see to it that its institutes of technology and [various advanced sciences] didn`t get listed and attracted attention.

Pakistan didn`t want another Pressler or its uncle or brother or nephew. God, do you mean this thing remained a secret? Good show for the Pakistanis!!

The Plan was logical and rational. Regionally accepted students were trained in Groups of no more than thirty each [a section!]. No foreign students were encouraged or accepted. So, there was no need to advertise the Institutes. A few thousand every year was an optimum number.

The scholarship holders from East Africa or Arab States were put through the regular schools of Arts and Engineering and Medicine. Not through the six Institutions each for each gender in the country.

Students from these were put through scholarship programs and through such elite schools as Stanford, MIT. U of Mich., and Cal Tech. Their return was assured. In the fourteen years of the functioning of these sent-overs I do not know of a case but one in which there was a ``drop-out`` and even that is in the process of being concluded in resumption of research back in its mother institute.

You wouldn`t see those institutes listed ANYWHERE!

Of course, you know that I josh.

And what is the biggest democracy in the world?

Where all the citizens have an equal opportunity to be killed!

Ah, but the equation, the mathematics, breaks down here: some have a higher opportunity to be killed than the others.

Look people,

I gotta agree with Harimau. India is a secular country to the max. It kills everyone: Sikhs, Muslims, Christians, Hindus... it doesn`t discriminate.

Ha ha. Couldn`t resist.

Hey, here`s another joke: What do you a call a country with a population problem?

The biggest Democracy in the world.

Boom boom!

Is ``maz`` a person or a corporation? Please, Chowk Admin., let me know.

I have enjoyed nasah`s literary wiriting well. pmishra is the Chowk editors` ``plant`` [the kind upgrade auction houses use to raise the bid]. Enjoyed his #55; a real bang!

However, re.#68, pmishra2, there is an adult answer: in the adult section of the video rental stores!!

In theory you may be right. Why not! If the US Supreme Court can turn 180° around on the ``separate but equal`` ideology [Plessy v. Ferguson, 1896 & Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas 1954] and, in more recent times, take a stand on the capital punishment issue [``Finding the Death Penalty Constitutional; Not `Cruel & Unusual Punishment` ... .`` THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT; GREGG V. GEORGIA 1976] and may soon reverse itself on the Roe v Wade
[abortion; ``SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES; ROE, ET AL. v WADE, 1973``], then I see no reason why you couldn`t resuscitate relativism.

My suspicion, however, is that you will not succeed, not on the Capital punishment issue -- the last thread by which the relativists may be hanging themselves by -- since you shall not have me in your camp. I am ferociously pro-Roe v Wade, and lethally anti Capital punishment!

Of course it goes without saying that I am most savagely pro- Brown v Board... . too!

I have found such gatherings kindreds of train, plane, airport acquaintances, in general. With one difference, maybe two: hope is their inner soul; a quintessence of opitimism. I know the reasons why. And they do make a difference. I know that too.

I have enjoyed your essay very much. It is effective, honest, sincere, light and best of all, devoid of difficult words.

PS. I have not read any replies so far. Perhaps that`s my loss; or, my good fortune!

The title read piquant, I looked forward to some self-entertainment.

This thought has been discarded since the mid-20th century. I wonder how, and by whom, was the author kept innocent of that definitive agreement?

I am really sorry to see it on Chowk since this kind of presentation/communication goes through the ``sieve`` of the editors to determine the survival of the fittest!! Its appearance has been a disservece to the author.
