Musharraf Spilling the Beans—Why Now?
A - It was a great blunder to continue with Islamic fervour even after the Soviet left Afghanistan. Why blame the West. The West never asked Pakistan to create Taliban.
B - The unpredictable Afghan tribes being a `strategic depth` was an equally stupid idea.
C- Kargil was stupid adventure - a disastor for the Kashmiri cause and Pakistan`s image. Telling open lies & losing yet another war was equally disgraceful.
D - Agra summit failed because he wanted Kasmir solution before other matters. After wasting three years, he agreed to the same composite dialouge.
E - Lumping all blame on Bhutto and not army for 71 is not fair.
On the plus side:
Finally, he has picked up the courage to quote that Jinnah`s speech: `You can go to the temples, mosques......Religion has nothing to do with business of State`.
His Waziristan deal is sensible. The traditional tribal elders who were sidelined during the Soviet War and Mulla was pampered to produce Mujahiddin is being reversed. Mulla is to be put back into the Mosque in line with the traditional Pashtun tribal customs. And it is the Malik in Hujra who is the temporal ruler.
He is naive but sincere. Actually secular but lacks courage to deal with Mullas.
His On-JOB-Training may cost us dearly in Baluchistan.

Apparently, Musharraf still lives with fallacies & fantasies. It would have been a great book if Musharraf had admitted that:A - It was a great blunder to continue with Islamic fervour even after the Soviet left Afghanistan. Why blame the West. The West never asked Pakistan to create Taliban.

Has Hinduism had the Longest Tradition of Continuous Religion?
Taking out the agnostic, the mankind seems to have thrown up two ideologies in an effort to search for the meaning of life and the unknown:
One came out of the Vedic thought of re-incarnation (samsara) which believed in perpetual cycles of life, death and re-birth. It believed that soul (atma) finally got liberated (moksha) based on man’s good deeds (Karma). Originally from Santana Dharma, the philosophy was followed by Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism with some internal differences.
The other ancient philosophy emanated from Zoroastrianism which explained that a man’s life is a struggle between the good and the evil. Its monotheistic concept included a satan, a messiah, death, resurrection, day of judgment, heaven and hell. Originally from Zoroastrianism, this philosophy was followed by Judaism, Christianity and Islam with their own other internal differences.
Core philosophy of Hinduism (Correct if I am wrong)
The Vedas provided a philosophy called Sanatana Dharma or just Dharma - the Eternal Way or Perennial Philosophy. Dharma is the process for aligning one’s body, mind and soul with the nature in search of the Ultimate Truth or Reality to find salvation in life.
The Sanatana Dharma also emphasized that there were many ways of reaching the ultimate truth or the reality in these words of Rig Veda:
Sanskrit: Ekam Sat Vipraaha Bahudaa Vadanti
English: ``Truth is One, though the Sages know it as Many.``
— The Rig Veda (Book I, Hymn CLXIV, Verse 46)
Indian Supreme Court ruling:
In 1966, Supreme Court of India defined Hindu faith as follows:
(a) Acceptance of the Vedas with reverence as the highest authority in religious and philosophic matters and acceptance with reverence of Vedas by Hindu thinkers and philosophers as the sole foundation of Hindu philosophy.
(b) Spirit of tolerance and willingness to understand and appreciate the opponent`s point of view based on the realization that truth is many-sided.
(c) Acceptance of great world rhythm — vast periods of creation, maintenance and dissolution follow each other in endless succession — by all six systems of Hindu philosophy.
(d) Acceptance by all systems of Hindu philosophy of the belief in rebirth and pre-existence.
(e) Recognition of the fact that the means or ways to salvation are many.
(f) Realization of the truth that numbers of Gods to be worshiped may be large, yet there are Hindus who do not believe in the worshiping of idols.
(g) Unlike other religions, or religious creeds, Hindu religion`s not being tied down to any definite set of philosophic concepts, as such.

The Death of a Nawab
In the final analysis, military action in Baluchistan is short-sighted.
Provincial autonomy & political settlement was the right course.
These Sardars were & are 100% secular and they kept the fundos out of Baluchistan.
Removing their clout will create a vacume that the Jihadis will love to fill using the slogan of autonomy.
And that would create a much more intractable and dangerous situation.
And Mushharaf would have lived up to that old experience that every military ruler left behind a gross bluder through his ignorance. (though may be with good intentions?)
Ayub - 65 war - uncalled for - that derailed the country for all times.
Yahya - Reduced the country to half.
Zia - Radicalized the country through Islamization.
Musharraf - Kargil & introducing political islam/terrorism in Baluchistan ? Leading to ...?

The Death of a Nawab
It should not have happened.
But Akbar Bugti had lived a full life. At this ripe age, he should have become an elder statesmen & lead a peaceful struggle. After all, other provinces have no autonomy either.
The Baluchi Sardars, if anything, have the full writ over their areas - lashkars, jails etc. His sons were a law into themselves - firing on main streets of Karachi and driving recklessly - nobody to question.
Taking up arms against this army, fully equiped with satellite tracking and precision guidance weapons, thanks to war-on-terror and Al Quaida, was a miscalculation.
The politicians, from the inside, do not mind letting Musharaf do all the dirty work for them in his Bravado & Stupidity - undoing Zia`s blunders; such as going after the Talibans, confining Islam back into mosque etc. They do not mind Baluchistan becoming more governable.
May his soul rest in peace. He was a handsome man & brave as well.

Some of our other sex issues needing religious intrepratation
Sex without wife’s consent rape: Kashmala
``http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/images/2006/08/26/20060826_04.jpg``
ISLAMABAD: Kashmala Tariq, a member of the NA Select Committee on Women’s Protection Bill, proposed that a husband having sex with his wife without her consent should be tried under rape charges. Kashmala said at a Select Committee meeting that men should not have sex with their wives against their will. She said that married women should not be treated like “buffaloes”. Kashmala told Daily Times that committee members Mehnaz Rafi, Zahid Hamid and Wasim Sajjad had endorsed her viewpoint.

No, it is unIslamic to stop husbands: Aamir
ISLAMABAD: Dr Aamir Liaqat Hussain, minister of state for religious affairs, opposed Kashmala’s proposal that men having sex with their wives be tried under rape charges, saying that it was “un-Islamic to stop husbands from having sex with their wives even if they were doing so without their consent”, sources told Daily Times. Aamir quoted Surah Nisah to defend his contention. Noorul Haq Qadri and Sher Afgan Niazi defended girls’ marriages at an early age. Niazi referred to marriage of Prophet (PBUH) to Hazrat Ayesha (RA), the sources added.

Obviously, you are right. But you are far too polite.
Sharia is nothing more than the history of the Abbasid Arabs. How can you make history as your Regulations?
And how come `Quran`, supposed to be an all all-encompassing book, missed out on `Rape`; and it had to put into the `Penal Code`.
Hassan Nasir, a liberal scholar, who took part in the TV debates; and made some logical sense has been attacked and is in serious condition in hospital. The fundos attacked him.
So be upfront with no compromise with Mulla at all - HE IS COMPLETELY WRONG - AND TELL HIM SO. No need to get into any meaningless arguement where he will throw Arabic at you!
Arjun and Hamidm2 speak that language very well. So does Saleem Chauhan.

Psychology of Suicide ’Bombers’
(In short, AlKayda is afraid of the rising prominence and success of Hajiboola - especially among non-Wahabbi Sunnis like Sufis, Hanafis, and others)
Any movement with sanctions from the heavens should not be pampered. It eventually hits back - Examples : Mujahiddin less, Taliban much more. Their Agenda is also in heavens- nothing to do with the country. These are the Pan-Islamic nuts.
However, after listening to hundreds of hours of discussions on reigious issues between Fiqye Jafferia & Deobandis/Sunnis on TV, I clearly felt that the Fique Jafferia guys were more logical, more liberal and frankly more sensible. Maybe, it is due to the minority syndrome
Our stalwarts in Jhang - Sipa Sahaba terms them infidals, Deobandis also think on similar line, the next target are the peaceful Ismaelis. Ahmedies have been already hounded out of the fold. At this rate, soon the non-Muslims will be in majority in Pakistan. BTW, Sufis also dangerously come close to be infidels. (Being somewhere between non-believer & Sufism, I am already an infidal)
So the only beneficial outcome of Hizbullahs performance could be more mutual acceptance of the Shias. Something good for Muslims in general.
My only fear is Hizbillaization of Lebonon. Converting that pretty French country into an idealogical state and ruing it.
The secular Israeli State is any time more preferable!

Psychology of Suicide ’Bombers’
( Those ‘suicide bombers’ want all of us to think seriously about the unresolved political conflicts of the contemporary world. It is quite possible that if those issues are not addressed by United Nations and international community in a fair and just way, the conflict between the East and the West, Muslim and non-Muslim worlds will continue)
Ok. That is fine. But why has Pakistan taken the responsibility of supplying suicide bombers at the international level at regular intervals?
There is no Iranean, Saudi, Sudani, even Afghani - all stated to be hardcore Islamic societies? And mostly, Punjabis - What were the Punjabis doing in the last 2000 years when so many from the West came, mauled and ruled them?
one cause - demise of culture and vaccume filled by religion!
Or perhaps the western raiders were bigger nuts than them!

Chowk is 9 Today
Association with you has been an enriching experience.
You continue to satisfy my fascination & curiosity of the past - and communication with people from the past. I met Dost Mitter and Farzana through Chowk.
You are also quick to rub off any sharp edges or outlandish theories & goad the reader to move towards the middle.
But you, too, seem to have become more conservative - with less tolerance for the mildly sensuous & poronographic stuff that used to appear a few years back. Sex has no religion. Let it out.
