Thanks for the valuable information about Zuhair.
You say:
"Zuhair Naqvi died very young, in Moscow -- he was drowned in the Danube, according to Dr Mohammad Sarwar (my father) who knew him."
So kind of you dear Beena! This is the first time some body talked about Zuhair, who was my dear friend and a fellow-traveller. We were together when the so called security forces separated us. Soon afterwards I learnt that Zuhair had died due to illness during his imprisonment. But now you tell me that he was drowned in Danube. Could you please provide me with direct contact with your father or brother of Zuhair or any body remembering him?
Btw, how your father knew Zuhair?

I am surprised that no body knows about Zuhair Naqvi, President, DSF, who was arrested from Main Hostel of KE College in 1950 as a part, probably, of crack down as a follow-up of the so called Pindi Conspiracy case. I wonder if his real name was Hassan Nasir, as most CP members were working then under fake names. If not, what happened to Zuhair who is also stated to have died during his imprisonment?

I wonder why there is no mention of the leftist 'All Pakistan Democratic Students' Federation' with Zuhair Naqvi of F.C. College, Lahore, its President, which was established soon after birth of Pakistan. Zuhair Naqvi was arrested in connection with the so called 'Pindi Conspiracy' case and, reportedly, died in jail after a couple of years. He was such a promising young student who died in such dubious circumstances, perhaps the only casualty of the trumped-up case. Can any body please tell me what actually had happened to him and the student organization he had headed, which could perhaps rightly be called the mother of students' organizations in Pakistan?

Yih to aap ne pig ka 'nijaspan' ka bataya he. Kia aap ke khayaal mein 'nijaspan' aur 'harram' ham-mehni hein? Harram to phir masjid bhi he, insan bhi, aur purest of the liquids, shirab bhi. To kia woh sab bhi nijas hein?
For your information the root of 'harram' is 'hurmat', as far as I know Arabic. Its a very tricky term which cannot perhaps be translated in Urdu or English. I see a neerest equivalent of it in Punjabi whereby we call something having religious significance as 'Bhaari'.
Amin Ahsan Islahi has tried to explain it as 'tabooed' in his 'Tadabar-ul-Quran'. Wallah aalam bissawwab.

Every thing is rotten here beyond repair. Shows of nuclear-bomb and missile tests are being held here while the suicide bombers are devastating the people. Where does Islam or any religion for that matter stand here? Why don't we think?
Men\'s Liberation...Better Late Than Never
But most authentic of the translations, one by Pickthall, says:
"As for those from whom you fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them." (Sura 4, verse 34 of Quranul Hakeem)
Acrding to Wikipedia the 'scourge' means:
"From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
For other uses, see Scourge (disambiguation).
A scourge (from Italian scoriada, from Latin excoriare = "to flay" and corium = "skin") is a whip or lash, especially a multi-thong type used to inflict severe corporal punishment or self-mortification on the back"
Mind also, this punishment is meant if there is a fear only of rebellion on her part and not an actual rebellion and it is a positive order,
a 'farz' to be complied with by the husband while the actual rebellion is to be reported to the court.

"Both Quran (See verse 34 of Sura 4) and Manu Samriti (An important Hindu Scripture) are unanimous in that the women, especially those given in your charge as wives, need to be beaten (punished physically) even if you only fear them to be rebellious. This being in compliance of a clear order (Nas) in Quran it cannot be termed as ‘violence’. My question is what should one (If he is a husband and not a pimp) do if his wife behaves disobediently to him but is enjoyable to others so as to turn one’s house into a free brothel?"
This not a religious edict but a Qurani 'hikmat'. Marriage is an institution which can be controlled by the husband only and so some coercive powers are allowed to him to avoid the rebellious woman's case being referred to the village panchayat where she may be punished by 'karo-kari'.

Excuse me Dr it seems to be just a piece of self-promotion by a professional psycho... He could not make a difference between the woman as such and her various relationships in the family or society at large. The woman as such or the liberated one is found only in the Hira Mandi where the men become just pimps and clients, called 'saaoo'. There is no place for the men to feel liberated anywhere from the machinations of the woman as such. I may tell you that what you claim to have done by your psychotherapy one of my aunts could do better with her 'Tahviz, Ganda' at no or a nominal cost.

A wonderful remembrance it is indeed. I belong to somewhat the same generation but on the other side. You bewail abut your 'wattan' Bhera and we bewail for the Hindu and Sikh friends we lost due to the partition holocaust. We could keep contact with some of the friends who had migrated to India but only for a short while. How we pine now to know about our friends most of them might have passed away by now. As our generation is dwindling fast I would suggest starting some website for providing a platform for rejoining such people. For instance I would like to meet those of our generation who belonged to Campbellpur (Now Attock).

But, excuse me dear RH, my question has not been answered. The same factors which, as you say, worked in favour of MQM why could they not work for Q, especially in Punjab and Islamabad, with an added factor of ethnic aversion against Mush?

A good analysis indeed. As you say the main factor in favour of the N was hatred for Mush and Nawaz Shareef posed the real opposition to him. But the question is how can N put through its agenda in the present set-up with Mush wielding the sword of 58(2)-B coupled with his hand-picked SC.
What a scenario this Pakiland is presenting today is beyond comprehension - with the CJ, Iftikhar Choudhary, languishing in house arrest along with his family while Nawaz Shareef, apparently, the most deadly opposition to Mush is vying for power.

DM says:
"in my opinion, islam was not an issue in this election."
You are right that Islam was not in the line of fire in the recent elections, but it nevertheless suffered huge collateral damage as it was, they say, the first item in the defeated Q-League's Manifesto which said "Sub se pehle Islam'(Islam, the first priority).
Further, the very fact that the parties using Islam as a political stunt have been sidelined goes to show that religion, of whatever intensity, has been thrown to the back-stage after a long time. So Pakistan seems to have been reborn as a true vision of the Quaide Azam.
