Nadeem, have you switched to Khabarnama on PTV as the most authentic news source? The graphic content on public television channels should be moderated, but censorship beyond that steps on the freedom of expression. Ultimately, given all choices, the viewers need to make the call on what they want to watch. The state of affairs in Pakistan is not ``normal`` these days and that is reflected in the media (both local and international). Unfortunately, it just seems to be getting worse, as Musharraf is trying to cling to power by all means while his honeymoon with the US is approaching its logical end.

The lack of focus on real issues runs down from the top and Musharraf is no exception. A judge and a number of lawyers get killed in a bomb blast in Baluchistan as part of a chain of terrorist attacks inside Pakistan. Next day, the doctrine-of-necessity president tells the press that the situation is improving, calls the recent incidents ``mamooli patakhay`` and focuses rest of his speech urging the nation to elect his supporters in the next elections. How is it different from the religious masses protesting some petty cartoons while ignoring all that is truly wrong around them?

Interesting article. One of the things supporting life on earth is our moon. And some scientific data indicates that it is slowly drifting away. There have also been some interesting recent discoveries about Mars, like the possibility that water still flows there momentarily. If this is true, this can help develop small ecosystems on Mars to sustain human colonies in future. But the most important thing is to preserve our own planet and keep it hospitable for life as long as we can. Arctic ice is melting at an alarming rate due to global warming, and there isn`t anything being done to reverse the damage.

And of course, we woke up one fine peaceful morning to see that there are ``militant training camps`` all around us. The historical connections don`t end at the point you want them to end.

``It was, after all, in the city of Peshawar that Al-Qaeda was born after ISI, Pakistan’s military intelligence, started to recruit Arabs to fight in the Afghan jihad.``
And of course the financial and military aid for the ``Afghan Jihad`` was raining down from the heavens on Pakistan.

A New Middle East
According to Seattle Police, this hate crime was act of an individual. The Pakistanis around him were doing what Americans around Timothy McVeigh were doing: being busy in their own lives, with their own families, making decent living and being law-abiding taxpayers. In case you are not used to the American way of life, most people here don`t have time to sneak into what others around them are thinking and doing.

According to local news in Seattle, the ``Pakistani`` individual was a US citizen under treatment for bipolar disorder. Today, the Pakistani community in Seattle joined the Jewish community to condemn this unfortunate event and mourn this loss of life. At the same time, a silent protest march was going on in Kirkland (a small town east of Seattle) for end of hostilities in the Middle East.

I was in Pakistan recently, and saw Molana JJ on TV. He was trying to convince people that the brain was given to us to understand that we should not use it.

Ibn Khaldun`s work ``Muqaddimah`` is an interesting read with reference to the society of those times. They considered science a luxury, and not a necessity. That`s why it wasn`t given the importance given to crafts. This book also has an interesting commentary on music as a profession.

I am least convinced by the liberal façade of Musharraf. There are way too many contradictions, although he is highly successful in confusing many people into believing that he is up to something genuine.

Very much the signature DT sound. It seems that they have tried to play it safe this time. Good listening though. I would place it somewhere in the middle of their albums, and would still prefer ``Scenes from a Memory`` and ``Awake``.
