Teaching Science Badly – and Well
Posted by foggy Mar 3, 2007 10:32 am
dear Pervez
it will be said science has been taught well, when the science pupil is made to master ``facts``, in a proper and correct way. facts must never suffer change even in a barely tangible measure. when this accuracy is ingrained in the science scholar, he will not need any religious, moral or SCIENCE sermon to tell him facts must never be changed deliberately, for the forces of caste, creed or greed.
Education Reform: Signs of Hope

Dear pervez recently i came across your article``Teaching science badly- and well``. it is a superb article. i noted some points which i will excise.
`science grips the imagination`.........i think so tru but still lot of channelizing is needed otherwise misfits of science will emerge and produce science fiction movies and literature.
`and I like most scientists, will never tire of it.`.......amen, long live the sentiment at least forev er.
`what are good science teachers actually supposed to do/ in class?`1 scientific habits of the mind....i feel excellent term.
2`the 2 are different( learning and teaching).....excellent points to aaaaa pon der!
3what is important to measure?.....sure way of bringing and keeping the science student on ground.
keeping this view, it will help your present article of chowk to guide and monitor the orators for the white paper.
Reclaiming the Middle Ground
Posted by foggy Jan 26, 2007 10:18 am
Islam is Islam. people can be criticised if they are not behaving accordingly to their religious teaching. a religion cannot be criticised. as nobody likes to be told they are in the wrong, this will have to be done in a gentle tone and good manners to the hilt. of course knowledge of religion is necessary, before correcting others. these make the ideally middle ground.
A Humanistic Approach Towards Mental Illness
Posted by foggy Dec 21, 2006 10:24 am
sorry, did not mean to make you foggy`. canada is a beautiful country. so coming down to the ornery scenario...mho simply stands for the mental health ordinance pakistan, which has been around since 2001. it is SUPPOSED that when it is Implemented-then mental patients will get their due protection. concerned people like the mental health staff, and the families of mental patients, the mental patient if educated enough, and the citizens of pakistan;allwill have a platform, where they will find their voice, and have their say, and be heard. me, i am one of the concerned citizens. i think your views on the dignity and quality of life of the mentally ill are gentle, good and ``humanistic``.
A Humanistic Approach Towards Mental Illness

you make it sound like we may not need the mental health ordinance to be implemented to achieve the same purpo se in Pakistan.that is the right to live a normal and dignified life for a person going through or recovered from a mental upset. if awareness and empathy for the mentally ill could be developed in just aday! how is it possible to reach so many people and meanwhile the mental sufferings go on. adding to the physiological sufferings which a human bein` has to undergo anyway. a mentally ill person negatively controls the lives of those close to him.then tell me will the MHO be redundant in our hands?
Musharraf’s Coup - Seven Years Later

dear Pervez (wot`s in a name?)
a very clear analytical correct article. though is it; where are pakistani scientist`s inventions (if any) to go? and who will drive off with them, in their truck, when they are in power?......that makes you write and focus so intently on political matters!! scientist or politician? well I never!!!!!

Happy Birthday!
I find ``sustained growth and organic evolution``, a fascinating expression. Speaking as ``Chowk``, has both direction and force. Cannot resist the change? Just flow along, and I am sure you will be speaking out regularly on sub continental issues. Call editorialization by any other nom. it will read the same. Wish you all the best!
Waiting for Enlightenment

Dear Pervez
What is good is not as you mentioned that `female announcers with undraped heads freelyappear on PakistanTelevision ;forthis picture is not a true indicator of freedom of choice in what one wears. Occident or nearer here, dont forget the person who feels comfy while wearing something ``well clad`` and ``well draped`. As what people watch on their Tv sets influences them. This entity of `psychological normality` [more com mon than you think] may feel looked down upon and inferior to the bold, undraped `look.` Even in the west there is solid importance given to [Hillary] Family values and sense of` modess-ty.`
Escalation of Hostilities in Middle East
Posted by foggy Jul 22, 2006 10:18 am
This region of turmoil so close to the mediterranean sea. Lebanon the apex of sight seeing scenarios. Beirut, the university to vie for. The pleasure cruises, the clockwork tourist industry, sailing and stopping, stopping and sailing, on the mediterranean, hooked to advertisements of the seasons religiously. Innocent tourists, innocent students, frontline reporters-- all caught in a holocaUstic fray.Of course the situation is screaming for all to be coNcerned!!!!. A super power is just a peak on top of the mountain of humanity, what about the rest of the mountain, the other nations; the not so super powers!!!!! where are their protesting noises, their avalanches. Of course the situation is an emergency. Lets join at least the voices that shout instructions how to deal with an emergency.that is short of banning students, tourists and candid journalists![must read the instructions proper though for we like to shout anyway and noise pollution has already crossed the danger mark!]
Islam and the Age of Globalization
Posted by foggy Jun 22, 2006 10:58 am
Crackers!!!! this whole GLOBE would be if peacemakers like Prof.Akber S. Ahmed and his team were not present on it. Their particular trend of activities are badly needed all round the earth (planet). and the last paragraph of your article sounds like a prayer from the heart. May I join too and say Amen! May poetic justice prevail on the global atmosphere and make way for true peace and justice.
Assessing Pakistani Science
Posted by foggy Jun 15, 2006 10:44 am
Dear Pervez,
When a man qualifies to be a doctor, he practises as a doctor;when a man qualifies to become a lawyer, he will practise as a lawyer;when a man qualifies as an engineer he works as an engineer. Picture clear. However when a man says he wants to become a scientist, what does he get to do in PAKISTAN? Picture not clear. Much work needs to be done on this picture. Ask a layman
a number of his children are studying to be doctors. Yes much of a laymans`` gdp`` percent is spent on his childrens` ambitious education. What about science? it does not form part of the laymans, wilful, choice, picture.
