The Export of Disease

A couple of years ago, the then Vice-Chancellor of AMU (Nasim Ahmed, probably) was leading the polio-vaccine drive in the muslim slums of Bhujpura and Shahjamal where many polio cases had been reported. Also included in that group were a few Jamaati maulanas. They went door-to-door, convincing the residents to the need for vaccinating their children (many of the residents had fled). Even though some residents tried to say that the vaccines were a conspiracy, they were trumped by the presence of the maulanas and the VC. That effort was fairly successful and this year Aligarh only had one confirmed case of infantile polio. I guess that the trust deficit, in combination with abysmal sanitary standards, grinding poverty and illiteracy is keeping polio virus alive and anti-polio campaigns unsucessful in that part of UP among poor muslim communities. Any successful effort will need to include a wide range of concerned people, and not only the government workers.
Muslim Reformers - A Peek Into the Past
A very good writeup on my alma mater......before this board rots into TNT, MKG, MAJ and YLH let me say this: AMU has been a godsend for muslim women`s education. I know many girls whose parents not have sent them for higher education anywhere else. And we once had a grrrreat hockey team from which many went on to play for India.
Got to run!!! Thanks again!

The problems lies in the Madrassas where the fanatic mullahs preach that Islam is the only religion and believers of other religions are ``KAFIRS``
Tushar,
Venting is all very fine....but your analysis is lousy! Either you are incapable of thinking logically or, as Ballu suggested, this is all you capable of-ranting !!

I do agree that the political class/system is totally corrupt and moribund and R&AW is in a disarray after the recent discovery of moles. So yes, there should be a demand from the people to the government that if there was information about the impending attacks, why was nothing done to prevent those.

So, killing a bunch of muslims will help eradicate terrorists? Just like it helped after Gujarat, and after the 1984 massacre of Sikhs? I do agree that the political class/system is totally corrupt and moribund and R&AW is in a disarray after the recent discovery of moles. So yes, there should be a demand from the people to the government that if there was information about the impending attacks, why was nothing done to prevent those.

Are there any hindus who actually want to attend AMU? For what? Can they get a job afterwards?
Rnajit sb.,
Moi.....and a number of my friends from Aligarh who passed out from AMU....some of them are in the US, a couple in Dubai.....they were mainly in Medical or engineering. I think they are all gainfully employed ;)

Here`s the thing:
Considering that the percentage of muslims in non-professional courses has been around 80-85% and that in professional courses (Med, engg, MBA) aroubd 60-70%. So, what then was the need to introduce 50% reservations last year? Shut out non-muslims altogether? But that can`t happen. Also, what were you thinking? That non-muslims who were denied admission won`t approach the courts? Please remeber that the University act of 1981 (that made AMU as an minority institution) has an inherent contradiction:
Section 5 (c) of the AMU (Amendment) Act 1981, empowers the university to ‘‘promote especially the educational and cultural advancement of the Muslims of India.” At the same time, however, section (8) of the same act categorically says that admission to students should be given irrespective of religious considerations.
In light of this, and a previous Supreme court ruling, why inititate such a stupid move?Stupid advisors? Too much reliance on Arjun? Hum Turram Khan hain, sabki haath mein aa jaygi!!!!
As an alig, I do think that AMU has a special status, including minority status. However, reservations on the basis of religion are not a part of the constitution, yet! Naseem Ahmad and Arjun Singh have not done anyone a favor in this matter, least of all AMU and the muslim community.

PS: Please leave tongue-in-cheek to Woody Allen.

Culture Cloning
At AMU, Aligarh, the seniors were greeted by a massive `Assalam-o-alaikum, irrespective of religion.....and it did not matter if the junior was muslim or a non-muslim. Doing so did not make me or numerous other hindus who were there into muslims. And really, no one gave it too much of a thought. So chill. And as someone has said on this board, `this too shall pass``.

This segment is the best I have read so far......Orissa is certainly an interesting place. Also, INTACH has done some really good work in various places. Finally, the info about Kala Pahar was interesting. I had, long ago, read about him in one the short stories by Jayshankar Prasad.
Thanks for a great read!

Great series so far. I once went on a bike trip from Aligarh to Ladakh via C`garh, on through Rohtang and then onto Leh. This was during the 90`s.....when UP was not exactly the quietest of places. Interesting journey.

Mahadev Gobind Ranade (1842-1901)
Yasser writes an article about...say..... phases of the moon. Malik 9million immediately declares him antimuslim-nonmuslim . Gandhi and Jinnah, by now resigned to their fate, trudge down and lie face down. In the time it takes to write 25 interacts, Mohar led hindus have gone medieval on Jinnah. On the other side, tropical suit wearing HP (means: One Who is Invited by Whitey; a Lot!) has successfully anal-lysed Gandhi. Gujju has just avenged 1000 years of `mleccha` rule by pissing on anyone and everyone unfortunate to be proximal to him. Urstruly has raised himself from his armchair with a lot of effort. He is using this opportunity to send ‘laanatein’ on Hindus (Hindu-on, tumhari gai mar jaye, wagairah wagairah). Echoboom is trying to jump up. His ‘jumbish-e-momin’ however, is stopped in mid-flight by the giant hydrocoele (good thing, grow it often!) which serves the dual role of his ideological baggage.
Ab aage…..
