So we can sum up something like this:
1) As opposed to India, in Pakistan regional and racial identities are very important even more than the larger national one. A smaller size only accentuates the differences. We should try understand and deal with Punjabis, Sindhis, Pathans, Muhajirs and Balochs differently. I know now someone will now come and post ``we are one`` in upper case.
2) Apparently Indians love whereas Pakistanis love to hate.
3) When we visit Lahore, Pakistanis are nice. Its hospitality not love.
4) For Punjabis of Pakistan variety a reunion with India means loss of their domination which they enjoy over rest of ``nationalities``. Their sense of identity is fragile.
5) Most Pakistanis would love to see India split into pieces. Like rest of the world its difficult for them to digest that people with as divergent as Indians can live together with reasonable degree of harmony.
6) A secular, liberal and united Pakistan at peace with neighbours is in everybody`s interest.
7) PS: Should we strike a deal with Musharraf? Who can speak for Pakistanis? The APHC?
8) Why Deobandis wanted a united India? Please, someone shed light on this one.

Re: # 530 See. I got u to agree on something. Assi ek hona chahnde han kyunki saada dil milda e twade naal. But seriously leave aside this unification business. No one wants enmity. Also in a federal polity involving India and Pakistan Punjab is bound to be united. Of course you don`t want that. In a reasonable settlement even endorsed by the Qaed e Azam provinces would have had their identity. I hope I am not irritating you again.

I feel that the subcontinent was divided on the basis of a theory of ``Nationalism`` given by somebody in the West. They also gave a communal view of our own history. And lo and behold we gulped it! Not only that we allowed ourselves to be vivisected on the basis of those notions. Our forefathers obviously coudn`t stand each other at times. But they were slaves in the hands of the times they were living in. Now the least we can do is not fight. There are no direct imperialist forces making us fight anymore. This is the responsibility of our generation to stop violence and move on. But violence starts in the minds. On this count some of chowkies really are disturbing. I hope I am overreacting. I remember Jug Suraiya`s article in Times of India wherein he says in his inimitable style that its better to swear than to kill. He quoted Freud to the effect that the first man who instead of huling a stone at the adversary swore at him was the inventor of civilization. I even feel like laughing at some of the remarks here. There is a bit of catharsis on display here.

How easy it is to derail a healthy discussion on a small forum like this. Just gives a measure of challenges we have to face. As for the EU model: no need to redraw borders just look for an Economic Zone. Pakistan has a land route to China. We have a long border with China and Pakistan both. Can make a formidable economic zone. For an inclusivist there are no hurdles.

England , Germany, France, Japan. One blood, one history, one culture? Is western Europe a nation, did u say? Precisely what I said. In the context of USA western European could be a nation. Similarly in our context Indian subcontinent is one nation. Its more like a meeting of minds or add hearts to it. We can still make these fickle entities meet. We have Mirza Ghalib and MA Jinnah to look upto.

Re: # 496 Name a country that satisfies your criteria of nation. Maybe Swaziland. Maybe Timbuctu. We did not want to occupy Kashmir. I am sure somebody can tell you historical facts on this one. Nor we want to occupy any part or whole of Pakistan. Lay your fears to rest. We are talking about the only road open to us. Realistically, there is no other way. We should never have been hostile to each other. Even brothers fight and make the worst of enemies sometimes. I don`t and can`t speak for the government. People to people is the way to go.

These are age old entrenched positions everyone should steer clear of. Nothing is achieved along these lines. Even APHC guys are seeing some light (some piece of news on sify).

Re: # 493 What is this curious bird called nation by the way. Our notions of nation are essentially different. You see the glass half empty and I see the glass. Without the glass nothing holds. The point is the notion of nation has to be inclusive and not divisive.

As for Kashmir, the whole thing is obviously far more complicated than what it seems. You are looking at one side of the picture. The other side is quite gruesome, believe me. PTV never showed you that picture.

Re: # 486 Even though I don`t see any problem of this sort in East Punjab (I am quite near), I think a double citizenship will solve the problem. Not my ideal solution though. A more uniform economic development is more what we need. Even in America double citizenship has practically become irrelevant after a reasonably uniform distribution of wealth and resources. They have a term for it. I think it is ``economic democracy``.

Re: # 484 I knew Kashmir had to come sooner or later. I have a feeling that Kashmir will show us the way. Kashmir will not be a problem but a part of the solution. This problem amply shows all that is wrong with the two nation theory. Here was a society at peace with itself. Kashmiri pandits and Kashmiri muslims sharing a common culture and living peacefully. All of a sudden someone decides they are different. How were the solutions attempted in 1948, 1965 and later (I forget the Kargil year, 1999 I think) through the barrel of a gun. Who gave them the right to choose their own representatives and who everytime gave a call to boycott or else face death. They are not the kind of people you and I are talking about. I would be indulging in the same game ``mine is better than yours`` if I continued down this lane. I wish someone deleted and rewrote 1947 for all of us. For our generation the job is cut out. Let`s reclaim what is left of us. I will again emphasise that Kashmir has the potential to throw up a better bilateral environment : porous border, more interaction, and a political bridge between two countries which embody one nation essentially. Remember siamese twins.
