Review of the Book: FREAKONOMICS Freakonomics is a good read. Its not meant to be a phd paper but a book of looking at things around the world(mostly america) with an economist's prespective.
Sadly Dr Gopalakrishnan like many academics in India especially in the IIT's and IIS's suffer from a very narrow and rigid mindset. This review merely exemplifies.
Thats why India's produces only produces more number of papers(and software professionals) ...and not innovations ..as they fail to immerse in current scheme of things.

have you ever come to india...sure your roads,airports etc are better but Indian roads are much safer. I remember an delegation of women from pakistan had come to india, they were suprised to see so many women out in open...women working...riding scooters...without getting harrased or haggled...whats the use of better roads or better infrastructure without freedom

Though I am not a big Israel supporter.Israel has always been demonized by the muslim world.If you look back,more muslims have been killed by despotic repressive regimes in Muslim countries like Iran,Iraq,and saudi Arabia.Saddan hussein kiled more muslims in the form of kurds ,than Isreal, hazaras were slaughtered in Taliban-Afganistan
Yet no muslim raised his voice as vehemently as they do when Israel in involved.

I think Islam really needs a Martin Luther .Christainity was in the same shape before the whole Reformation and the the Protestant movement(perhaps worse).Priests were corrupt,heresy`s and Inquisitions were conducted and people were burnt at stake.
Reformation brought about the best in human spirit, art in the form of paintings,sculpture
of human bodies. Forget the sculpture would for Islam even paintings of fully clothed people are unIslamic.I dare not even mention the plight of women..........................................women delegation from pakistan when they come to india notice women everywhere in the streets,riding a scooters..its hard for them to imagine women being independant.

Waiting for Enlightenment Masadi get your figures right .According to the latest surveys about 350-400 million people live below the poverty line ,75% of which are in rural India....thanks to the lack of land reforms.I fear pakistan with its feudal system would be even worse.

I speak of 400 million indian middle class ,educated and sincere in transforming of this beatiful country which has made tremendous progress in last 50 odd years ,Which would still would have made more ground had it not been for our inefficient bureacracy and corrupt poiliticians.

This is a completely foolish statement.

1) The move by Arjun Singh is completely political.ARjun Singh is no savior of OBC`sjust an opportunist.

2)Reservations over the period of more than 50 years havent led to the betterment of majority of the people ot was aimed at.It was created a creamy SC/ST layer nothing else

3) Reservations ironically has stratified the Indian society in terms of caste.

4) there are other avenues for reaching out to the backward classes for eg free primary education, scholarships etc.

5) Reservation greately bring down the merit of an institute.An employer will first ask the candidate whether his/her seat was reserved or free....Just imagine going to a doctor who has cleared his MBBS on 10 years with a minimum passing grade..who got the seat at a lower benchmark.

I completely agree with you Bollywood is under no moral complulsion to make socially relevant movies,It like any other industry has keep in mind its commercial interests.
however recently the advent of multiplexes has stratified the audience ,enabling film makers to capture the sophisticated urban market for example movies like Hazaroo Kwaishe aaese,GodMother.. etc.
