The Heart of Starkness: Naga Diaries 4
Posted by nandan Apr 27, 2006 10:33 am
Dear Ianla,

I have stayed in guwahati for 7 years and have visited the various North Eastern states including Nagaland...
I can understand the apathy that the rest of Indians have for N.E people, but I think it is in the best interests of both Indian government and the people of Nagaland that state remains a part of India.Even if hypothetically Nagaland would be given independance ,neighbouring countries like china would allow its independance or long, and considering Indian record of allowing its manifold communities and ethnicities it is not such a bad idea.Someday in near future I hope that Indian Army is replaced by Nagaland state force.

IB,

This self- determination talk reminds me of PTV news bulletin where atleast 15 min are kept aside for kashmir. Why dont you guys keep your house in order ,take care of your mohajirs and baluchis before advising us.

RDB is a great movie. After a long time I have watched such kind of a movie.Full Paisa Wasool kya.Great Fun,entertainment with a social message. It has something which my generation can relate to.
It also gives a message what we can make a commercially successful Hindi movie without copying from hollywood or resorting to the standard formula.
A must see for all CHOWKIES.
Sher Shah Suri

yasser,
Unlike most of your articles ,I dont agree with you .I dont think Sher Shah Suri should be glorified ,or identified on the same lines as Ashoka. The difference between the former and the a latter is like chalk and cheese.
After the massacre of kalinga Emperor ashoka underwent a spiritual transformation. He became a man of peace ,a man who believed in service to his people.
Sher Shah Suri ,although a brilliant Military strategician was not a great ruler.Do you recall the massacre of surrendered Rajputs of the Malwa.

I think Timurlame, ghori ,ghaznavi, abdali and sher shah were all muslim invaders. They are painful part of Indian History.Recently on the History channel they were showing how timur massacred 80,000 infidels or kafirs in delhi and made a pyramid of skulls.Jesus thats barbaric and cruel.I wish Hindus were more united and agressive and perhaps more cruel in regard to their agressors.
Anyway lets not get stuck with the past.Times have changed............

FACTS ABOUT INDIA
Posted by nandan Mar 29, 2006 04:33 am
fact 1)India never invaded any country in her last 10000 years of history

I wish we hindus would have been more agressive .India has always been invaded by afgans and mongols and thats a painful part of history ,reading about the slaughter and plunder by the muslim invaders who had total disdain for the non believers or kafirs.
Our sense and belief in peace and mutual co existence was taken as a sign of weakness by these invaders. If only for one hindu slaughtered there would be 10 pathans or mongols slaghtered then they would have seen India with bori Nazaar.

by the way Timur the lame salughtered and beheaded 80,000 Indian civilians in a matter of hours and I am not even talking of Ghoris,Ghanavis and abdalis.

Only this is the fools like RSS and VHP dont reliaze that we cant recreate history. However we should shed our meekness ,work out against the caste system ,encourage the liberal
elements in muslims society and create a modern ,secular and prosperous society..

while I agree that most of the Hindi Films( I hate to use the word `Bollywood`) are trashy ,masala films I feel there are always a few exceptions like Lagaan,Dil Chahata Hai and more recently Rang De Basanti(I am not even mentioning the old ones)

I dont feel Holllywood should be seen as a benchmark for making movies as most of them are average at the best inspite of all their technical wizardry and special effects ,when it comes to content and depth they fall miserably.

As far as songs and dances are concerned ,they have always been a part of storytelling in our folk culture and there is nothing wrong in using songs and dance in the narrative if it suites the situation of the movie.

Lastly I would like to mention a change that has been going around several years with the advent of multiplexes. The result has been the segmentation of audiences ,because of which one can make a movie that may not cater to all audiences ,but be commercially viable as well( for example Page 3,Hazaroo kwaishe aisee, and recently Being Cyrus). This greatly improves the quality and content of a movie and give these movie a theme.

Its interesting reading your articles.....You remind me of my father. My father is a retired
IIT professor. We used to have academicians from all ethnicities visiting us IIT Mumbai quarters ,and it was a nice secular ,liberal atmosphere to grow up in.

Thanks for taking me back in the memory lane to probably the best years of my life.....

Wishing you and your family all the best

Ready for a Modern Pakistan?

Nice article Yasser ,I like the honesty and the optimism. One hopes that pakistan soon becomes a modern progressive state.

However unfortunately you havent come up with a road map has to HOW THIS COULD BE ACHIEVED.I would another article which would come up with something like that

``Musharraf must ensure that his is the last military intervention and from 2007 onwards Pakistan will become a constitutional ....

Why would be do so until the people force him to do so???

The Algebra of Arundhati’s Injudiciousness

Frankly THE GOD OF SMALL THINGS was a very hyped book .Its was a media frenzy that started when the book was released ,with AR interviewed on every channel.

I was disappointed when I actually read the book. Its think it was very much overvalued and so is AR.

Rejection is another of her publicity stunt...it would have been better to accept the award from an institution like the SAHITYA AKADEMI which through goverment sponsered is ferociously autonomous .

An Algebra of infinite justice is just leftist bashing of all capitalist values and what america stands for. However the BOOKER is very much a British award( a strong U.S ally) so by the same logic accepting the award was endorsing that government`s policy.

I remember that OCTAVIO PAZ was uncertain in accepting the NOBEL PRIZE ,he met anandamayi devi who told him that rejecting the award was `` giving importance to himself as well as the award`` .she advised him to accept the award in indifference.Ultimately OP accepted the award.

AR accepting the award would have done the same

`` the Naga situation is. Nationalism. Right over land. Guerilla warfare. Army repression. Fight against colonialism........``

Are`nt you statisfied with the ISI and the jehadis trying to create probems and endevouring to break India.

What kind of colonialism are you talking about. It is in Naga peoples best interests to stay with the India Union ,otherwise they will be swollowed by the neighbouring countries .

Pakistan\'s \'Incomplete\' Democratic Experiment
Posted by nandan Jan 16, 2006 01:33 am
Dear Manto

I hope for the sake of the South Asia ,that pakistan becomes democratic.Democracy inspite its multiple flaws is the best system for governance as it provides some sort of accountability.

True Pakistani roads are much better and pakistan has fewer beggers but you have to come here and see the change in mindsets ,the change in attitudes ,the surge in the aspirations of the people, the emphasis laid on education by the poorest of poor, the representation of the Scheduled Caste and other backward castes in the electorate/administration,their demand for equality, the confidence of the middle class........................

These are the changes which are not visible to the Naked eye ,these are the changes which are deeper than better roads and fewer beggers.

I wish and hope the same happens in Pakistan

RE # 7,9

Well I have a similar photo of Sartaj Aziz and Mursheed Hussain being Humbled by Tim Sebastian of the Hard Talk Fame.

The below graphic is in very bad taste. It shows the extent of intolerance.

Hell with `Kafirs` indeed.hahah
