#24 Urstruly. that cartoon is positively sick. you think the citizens of USA and UK are that hard-hearted to laugh over Pakistan`s tragedy? I wonder how many of your own hard-earned tax-deductible dollars you have donated to charities in this ``alligator-tears`` way?Ehsan Faramosh.

Turkey is Muslim. Says who? Try saying that to someone from that country and see what you get.

it`s more effective if people with ten abbreviations after their name, or ten digits in their bank accounts, do the screaming, and not on chowk... in the WSJ/WP/NYT/CNN etc.

btw umair, I`m not rich enough for my scream to be heard. it`s more effective if people with ten abbreviations after their name, or ten digits in their bank accounts, do the screaming, and not on chowk... in the WSJ/WP/NYT/CNN etc.

I have no words to express my disgust. Romair, why don`t you just come out and say ``real pakistanis not mohajirs``.

#52 ranger, why is age so important in asian nations, esp. for education? once you hit 30, you`re ``old`` for entering the job market. why is that? you can`t just generalize and say 30 year old madrasis with dark circles under their eyes retook exams five times before gaining admission into some xyz institution. people have lives, and dung happens. instead of applauding a 30+ person for attempting to seek higher education, and going through a rougher time, with maybe basic high schools skills deteriorated over the years, instead of pointing to that person and saying here is someone who wants to achieve and rightly deserves to, why are they put down? Employment application, over 30, oh sorry, we need someone younger. Over 50, babaji, it`s better for you to sit at home and sip tea. When institutions like Harvard can recognize the influence and wisdom of retirees through specially created programs for them, why are people esp. in southeast asia so backward? what is so WRONG with hiring old, or older, people? just my gripe...

btw, if you are commenting on practice of Islam today, who are you to judge? and how can you be so sure Puritans were so ``pure``? what were they, aliens?

#12, yes, it is the weaker ones who are always taken advantage of. That, I have found, is the general rule in in life.

re# 28, I do not think it fair to compare LUMS to IIM. IIM has extremely rigorous entrance exams and is completely merit-based, you cannot bribe your way in, or so I have seen from family members who have sat for IIM exams and some (less well-off ones) gotten in, some (richer ones) not. Whereas a number of my weathly but completely addle-brained or below average schoolfriends went to LUMS. Even after they graduated I felt that many IIM grads of my acquaintance were better at quantitative skills, debates, discussions, and had a better general knowledge overall. Not to belittle LUMS grads, but I think that in LUMS if you have money you can get in. Correct me if I am wrong.

on another tangent, such frank writing from a man is appreciable. it reads very much like what a woman would feel.

athar shiraz, I have not looked at your profile yet, but this was a rather good piece. a bit unconventional perhaps, but`s it`s all good. there are some grammar mistakes and some incoherentness, but you convey the essence. may I ask, there seems to be some soul-searching, some seeking for answers here... have you been victimized by rape? unwanted attention is tantamount to rape, in atleast a psychological sense, because it can leave a person highly disturbed mentally, and very vulnerable emotionally. you don`t need to answer me of course, but perhaps that is something you want to ask yourself. on another tangent, such frank writing from a man is appreciable. it reads very much like what a woman would feel.
A Certain Age
moving from the pervasive media to jails to filth, caste system, jobs of disrepute, and then internalizing it all, chunneling it through fears, and then moving the spotlight onto the insignificancies of our daily lives. you have managed to capture a great deal in a brief glimpse. well done.

#36, it`s the rich who drive philantrophy efforts. practically speaking, there`s nothing wrong with cause marketing. free lunches induce beggary. give and take is not a bad idea, there is some incentive to contribute. fat free appetizers are not a bad idea either. Just because someone is rich does not mean he has to carry the entire world`s burden on his shoulders.

so what`s new? isn`t nearly everyone a hypocrite, about something or the other, sometime or the other? there are many aqil-types in feudals, so? that doesn`t diminish their worth in any way. every top to bottom school in the west is littered with them. they do ayashi on some poor babaji`s sweat, write great reformist theses, do pro bono internships at the UN, then go back and lord it up. big deal. you can`t really even blame them. it`s the way they were raised. plus, even aqil-tyrants have their uses. you can`t expect one person to change or even challenge the system, he`d be a fool and look like a simpering simpleton to even try. as for the poor child, she`s a poor child. circumstance. you pet them, pity them, and forget them. we do it everyday.
