From Patna to Detroit (A true lifelong migration)
Posted by kidbeegorilla Oct 7, 2005 01:54 pm
#69 khamosh pani was not sabiha`s first venture, albeit her first feature film. Who will cast the first stone is there, and for a place under the heavens, karachi, where peacocks dance, etc.

re: Why dont women who do work in Partition and gender contribute to chowk?

maybe because they`re too busy organizing the next NGO meena bazaar. working with gender issues is a 9-5 job, excepting some (few) women.

btw, this story, written by a male, shows a lot of sensitivity to the woman`s plight. that`s pretty good. the only way a man can be any more sensitive would be if he turned into a woman. and that would open another can of worms.

I watched pinjar, thought it was a bit over the top, didn`t know it was based on a book. like the female protagonist, why did she go back to pakistan in the end with the guy who kidnapped and then raped her? she fell in love with her rapist?? that is so sick. so what if he repented. wouldn`t a stronger woman have returned with the guy who came looking for her, to her original home, and gone on with the life she always wanted in the first place? why compromise? may be I didn`t understand it properly. it was subtitled.

so who had what at your Iftaar?

also, do you invite non-muslims or non-fasters at your Iftaar? Or is it only for fasting Muslims? How do you find out who fasted?

We lived next to this old couple once, at Iftaar they would open their apartment`s door to ``let the angels in``, and all the kids in the building of ALL ages would rush over, go directly to their dining table, wow what a table, it looked like a palace feast... delicious cakes, pastries, sandwiches without the ugly edges, samosas, those little stars made outta rice. sigh. I went a few times and came back with a stuffed face. When Ma found out she gave me a hiding. Said those people don`t have enough to eat for themselves and they let you urchins eat their whole month`s store in one day.

this story is probably typical of thousands of people. it`s called life.

and wtf is right, it represents naked truths for many that you simply can`t change, mostly because those who undergo it are either dead or in the stage of dying. don`t trivialize it with one-sided, and yes, maudlin, agendas. Did men not suffer during the many partitions? That son going off to kashmir, what was that?

#302 correction: mantolives, not mountolives. it just kills to not have an author responsible for a piece respond.

out of all the comments here, #250 was the most pathetic. tsk tsk.

it makes even an unbaised observer ask why mountolives is replying for educated and enlightened aisha. is she too busy helping people find their naseebs?

ok now be honest everyone, did you or did you not eat or think of eating pizza after reading this?

I took mohammedamjad`s advice and ordered chinese.

Beej, u ok? had a long night after the gandhi thing huh?

sachinukum, betcha my silver bowl is bigger than yours ;)

jang, pie in the sky, my oh my, after this pizza, what shall I try? some roti with aloo, some gobi ka phool, stuffed oysters with spinach, wouldn`t that be so cool? I`ll write another poem, this time with a pen, and see what you offer from there in your den.

saminasha, was that a snigger or a question? I don`t do questions.

haha. good one about the you`re supposed to be human 7/24.

why do women wear more headscarves in the days of Ramadan than in other days? Is it because they have to cook so much they rarely get time to wash? (just asking).
Immigrants: Na Idhar ke, Na uddhar ke

Batool, are you canadian? if not, you are still udhar ki (my view). It`s desi canooks (born breed live) who are na idhar na udhar oulter poutler. i am sure being a guest worker is a bit difficult, you try to acclimatize to the new surroundings, then you have to go back and readjustto what you left behind. But it`s harder when you have yourself directly left nothing behind and are constantly forced to jam it up your face, as in the case of people like yours truly, born and bred elsewhere and forced to confrom to ideals and upbringings from some totally other wierd place. what connection do people like me have with south asia, except clothes and some cheap flicks/sitcoms? yet we are constantly bombarded by questions like ``where are you from``, from our own people as well as outsiders where? hell, HERE dude. And I don`t even have an accent! (I mean desi). i don`t know why our elder folk force this regression on us, but they do. k i gott a go, l8r.

and no, it takes a month to get your phone fixed up in good ole GTA. and have you seen the recycling mess the city`s teamed up with? haha. puke.
