Psychology of Men\'s Honour and Women\'s Sexuality
Posted by foggy1 Jun 3, 2008 10:08 am
You have interviewed a great many immigrants and it seems the main suffering of men is that of guilt. The women and girls mostly bear the brunt of violence.Just wouldn’ t help comparing the picture to here-Pakistan.Particularly because you have strongly suggested professional help to be sought by these victims.Putting men’ s honor and women’ sexuality to the issue of a patient’ s needs, whether the patient be a man or a woman-frankly raises one’ s hackles. Of course the patient is adequately covered by lack of inhibition resulting from all that pain and despair.but this perspective gets blown up out of proportion by people belonging to the human (without the letter e in the end) species who happen to be his friends, family, acquaintances. Also it is a matter of shame, that the professional workers of our mental health institutions play to the gallery…and put the patient to disadvantage and his near ones to the eminent position of honor for the men in the family and matters of sexuality for the women at the same time.

Institutions for Mental Health ought to be Empowered to receive those cases that turn up all on their own.It may be that the abnormally behaving person, who is dreadfully frightened too, maybe someone who is terribly mentally upset. He may have been chased all the way, from the roads, herded and "shoo-ed"into the Mental Health precincts .Just because he is alone, does not mean that he would be physically thrown out into the streets.I did say EMPOWERED.
The institution would relieve his fright and anxiety ,treat him, keep him, diagnose him, rehabilitate him and place him in good care. The other type of mentally challenged person, coming to the MH institution, is the one brought by someone, who is a complete stranger to him.The EMPOWERED Authority should accept the mentally upset individual for care and treatment and make things as smooth as possible for the person who brought him.If you are that 'paranoid' about the person, who you might fancy to be an 'abandon-er'.Then get his moniker photographed, his thumbprint taken, get the equipment installed which compares the prints with NADRA id cards.Get all his bio-data, verify them, get all Biometrics to surround him like an MRI machine .But let him go ASAP without harrassing him.
The third type of a person who can arrive alone at a MH reception center is the intellectual, and educated one.The one who is stressed out, mentally upset ,thinks his 'neurotic' s/are going too far, and he needs a psychoanalyst.Such people frequently do consult at and visit MH institution without hitch and are not ashamed of it.If they come in the middle of the night extremely panicky, looking "incoherent", that is no reason for you to turn them down.If you turn down such a literate case then I would say you have been empoWERED for nothing.Remember such cases might seek legal cover because they are handling court cases, property matters, family financial matters.
Another type of a case who can turn up alone in any part of the institution , is one who may have been earlier discharged from it.Maybe the psychotherapists who used to treat him have left for their private practice or for abroad.Maybe some of the staff may still remember him, but is on some other duty shift or vacation .Treat the loner, as a patient, treat him as a human bein' who has given you the honor of being chosen to help him in his time of need.Treat him with dignity. It is your job.I would recommend tailor made course on humanistic psychotherapy for the entire staff of a MH unit, before they start their professional work.

Where Billions Vanish

It was before HEC came into existence, that I had to go to KU for some work concerning someone very dear to me.Near the inside, of one of the gates, where I was waiting, I overheard some university students talking. They were lamenting the fact that the atmosphere for research at the university was poor, wanting, and not at all supportive. For many of the professors they had dissappointment to show. They were praying for PhDs in each and every department of the university, at least one in each department. Now there is HEC.PhDs are being churned out, checks and balances of quality are being exercised. There are still many departments of many Pakistani universities without a single PhD, but the dream has begun, and its turning into reality is quite possible.Having said that, lets, what the heck, support HEC.At least encourage it to provide and place at least one PhD Professor in each department of all the universities of Pakistan; where he would be able to be a good guide and mentor to his research scholars, drawing upon his own research experience.HEC must not form just a favorite nexus lumped with PhDs;doing elaborate research work on predetermined favorite topics, which feed international quest but not indigenous quest, but anyhow draw heavily on indigenous information. They consume billions of dollars and make our universities look like research outsourcing for international research study LABS.

Student union yes, student politics no. However:
I had read your article;Where’ s my coffee. About political economy you said (ref;;....from Marxism)
that man is nothing but a tool of the political economy of life and history. Is that the reason why-a)Scholars cannot choose the topic of research they would like to do? b)highly qualified fresh graduates do not fit into jobs relevant to their qualifications.c)independent candidates do not get to freely contest in elections. It is high time that the government in power and all the political parties would stop using people as tools
and start providing tools to the people;so that a person can make his good better and his better superlative
to boost political economy and make it sound and healthy.
Encounters With Depression
Posted by foggy1 Mar 2, 2008 07:37 am
mental health,on the negative side is often associated with unmanageable dirt, filth and squalor.state-of-the-art hospitals catering for geeneral health too are degraded to a humiliating low, the day the ‘’sweeper’, does ‘nt turn up.the sweepers belong to the most neglected class of workers, overworked and underpaid’’, by the metropolitan administration.there are some welfare bodies like edhi’ s which is most dependable in pakistan, who aare particular about matters of community health and hygiene.they maintain several ‘’homes’’ among which there is one for destitute women.most of them are aged, and abandoned and suffering from depression.as far as i remember through news dailies’ reports, and interview of bilkis edhi herself, that they make sure that the ‘’homes’’, re thoroughly clean, spic and span and neat daily without fail, especially the toilets.Repeat toilets. And there is no shortage of menial staff for this particular work. What iwant to point out now, is that if Mental health accomodation is procured all over the city, in convenient community focalized areas, so that a ''house'' would cater to the needs of a local community , it would be a welcome convenience.Keep it simple otta be the motto. The community could be sole in charge of maintaining without shortage the daily cleaning chores of the ''house,''like Edhi. There could be spacious floors, and rooms, all with ''modular''facilities to adjust the size of available space. The furbishing could be bare essentials. The patient's families if they so desire could bring their own furniture and AC's too. What the higher administration could do would be to ensure adequate number of well trained "psychotherapist support staff"and available "psychotherapy" specialists and consultants, to provide care for the admitted patients. For humanities sake we want a peaceful and respectful atmosphere to treat our mentally ill, right close to our neighborhoods, which make up our one and only city. The cityhas its limits. We are asking something wthin limits!
Mass Difference: The Bhuttos and Civil Society
Posted by foggy1 Feb 3, 2008 11:55 pm
people who do not even spare the sad occasion of death, and say unkind things, do not want to just hurt.they want to ensure that they unlike the sensitive folk, will not bend even a sliver from their rigid outlook;sothat they may not speak forgivingly about the deceased.which quality (forgiveness) an occasion of death is known to provide to many normal thinking people, even if they had differences before.such people want to shock others, more than anything else.there is something much more wrong with these people than simply wanting to hurt and be unkind.
‘evolutionary struggle’- a fascinating term. as we know what evolution is, why would ‘evolutionary’ be viewed and acknowledged in the past only?evolutionary changes take place anyway even without conscious struggle.and this changing process results in stages which can be identified-a sure prognostic view! your description of the classes which influence socio-political change, is accurate and interesting and helps one to get such a view. things should grow better towards a higher state of development, ought they not? that’ s evolution!
Pakistan After The Assassination: Interview with Pervez Hoodbhoy

give them a chance.everybody by proclaiming jfk and liakat ali khan' s shrouded in mystery events, and stamping and sealing the results of this depression causing morbid assasination as sharing the fate of the former two. might just make us miss something of a clue even now.let modern scientific technology fill in the blanks even now, and do not let them label the 'hosing' scenario as a 3 wash-that is a washout, a hogwash or a eyewash.thank you pervez for benny's biography.besides did the lone taxi driver say ''deri ho gaya''.?
The Good Monster: Musharraf\'s Cultural Legacy

apparently the trouble with our people’s political view is that nobody looks good when governing from top,for more than a couple of years.and merely fighting this view is enough to deplete the fuel for any sort of progress.conflicts and paradoxes will be the theme of a leaders personality when his favored education, talent and intention, for competitive progress is exhausted before it comes into being proper-vis a vis the sinking marshes of poverty, population and political partying (the latter) only for power hungry loot bag ‘party games’, and not at all for providing solutions for the former two! that does not mean good souls do not occupy official positions.there are many who do not like to see people suffering because of weak administration. i have seen many officials go outta their way to help folk. one wishes however that the adminstrative set up would be intrinsic strong and completely immune to the interference of politics.

It is a play of words. Is it man’ s playful nature? No, likeliest it seems to come out of boredom.as when one gets bored with tv ads,or one wants to start a conversation.speaking without thinking, then comes easy.the words civil, civil society, why not citizens. then i got reminded of the word ‘’regularisation’’,as in illegally constructed structures. most play with words and derive meanings to suit themselves, because english is not our Mother tongue. specially business english, is not our tongue at all. so whose business is regularisation?then it is surprising why a question arises when the group of youths come to see you? the answer is in your article. a cause, any cause, generally speaking is used to put youth on the scene, with self importance, furthering social contacts, getting some work done for cause, for family, friends, acquaintances and community. if community benefits individuals will too. such self important work daily, then go home, no work, and get stomach full, gives sense of fulfillment to ordinary lives.we center around family and food. we love/live to eat and we make our family work to make food the all important central issue; this gives us immediate gratification; this is our society, nowhere in the world you will find such.nice rambling article of yours in these times of tension.
Alcohol Use and Abuse
Posted by foggy1 Oct 13, 2007 09:54 am
in your article you have mentioned addictive personality. is there any developmental or predictable inkling to it? or is it just a label after the deed is done. before the person becomes actually addicted to some thing like alcohol, what is he? a weak or an unstable personality? Globally, but more in the developed world, there are places where the weak and unstable personality can be defined, spotted and approached for timely intervention. for instance schools college, other educational institutions, places of work, clinics, hospitals and other medical institutions, and not forgetting prisons. proper records are available and excellent reference bases exist. suicide and homicide are the culminating two end all be alls of an @addictive personality@ i gather, and must be apprehended. in pakistan the exposure to alcohol is covert, and therefore cannot be approached easily. school going children are exposed to poetry like that of Ghalib, and are exposed to the mystic, beautiful nature of wine ensconced in superb words. while the accent would be on teaching and appreciation of the art of poetry of a truly unparalleled remarkable poet -ghalib. yet children cannot help wondering at the qualities of a banned fluid that makes the imagination flow like -wine!!!

i may have made relevant comments on this article in august i think. but now i cannot help say something about your article in Daily Dawn's images-titled disneyland. it was ter-ribticklingly funny. brilliant piece of writing. if it was not so funny, one would have cried at the pathogenically, poignant pathos of the scenario behind the funny veneer. why did you write kesc in the same Vein? i had to like reverse and see, and it was written kesc certainly.asif the brunt of humor was borne at this point, i just couldna stop laughing. amusing to conjecture, if the kesc really got to be there, then the whole disneyland will be running on {[kunda]} system!

The Power of Ideas and the Modern University
Posted by foggy1 Sep 18, 2007 09:26 am
dear pervez, you have mentioned higher education. i wish to comment on that.hec is replete with funds for research, and wants research to be nothing but high quality, and has taken adequate steps to ensure that. which is as it should be. even so, it seems to come down hard on the well established traditional institutes, by stopping the funds for ongoing research programs, because of the involvement of its faculty members in @plagiarism@. the most modern requirements for research have come in a little too quick, for some of the senior professors. their trying to keep step with and then go forward seem lopsided and a little awkward. one is reminded of the scene of annual sports day of ones college. when senior professors are asked to participate in popular events, and they do so amply exhibiting their sporting spirit, to set an example, to encourage the shy student to follow and take part in sports. such professors were cheered and lauded, although the spectators could not help being amused. now if suddenly the picture changes and these venerable people are accused of cheating, will it not stun and cast into gloom all cocerned?hec otta spare no effort, time and money to set the record straight. make the transition from the slow traditionist to quick ultra modern research more easy and acceptable. allow re-experiment, re-research and correction of statistics, and total excision of plagiarism, and replacement by genuine research terminology. the fair name of the senior saff should be cleared of all smear and they would be allowed to retire in grace and dignity.

wonderful.such a mild commentary and a true caricature which is so amusingly typical of our TV programs, the people concerned with TV programs, the guests interviewed, the political groups and their highlights, and something for prevention of cruelty to animals. you know how dogs run after their own image in the shinning wheel caps of cars will hav to deliberately get it noted, do toy trucks have them too.keep it up i mean your articles in dawn daily too. refreshing sense of humor i can digest politics only this way. i was dowite but never ji ymo or nsf. yet when there were no clashes these parties were the spice of life of the college activities which now form part of memory lane only.
Seven Causes of Human Suffering
Posted by foggy1 Jul 29, 2007 09:43 am
that is a nice rainbow of 7 causes.i think class race gender and physical and mental disabilities contribute greatly to frustration, defeat, and the only way to get back at the injustices done to them by the remaining issues is to be self destructive and drag the frustrating offenders along with them.efforts should be made to turn society humanistic, it will definitely be more peaceful...and secular willy nilly will be in tow.

what is the use of following events developing, with eyes wide open and brain fully geared to be able to arrive at a prognosis.and yet the end seems shocking.are we in a state of calculated denial.is there any room for mild and lenient thought?and hope. do you have any scientific methodology to guide and nip the horrific in the bud before it is too late? like it was recently qed
