US carrier moved to Arabian Sea


WASHINGTON, July 8: A US aircraft carrier has moved to the Arabian Sea to support military operations in Afghanistan, leaving the Gulf without a carrier, US defence officials said on Tuesday.

The shift by the USS Abraham Lincoln over the weekend comes amid stepped up insurgent violence in Afghanistan where US combat casualties have been on the rise even as they have dropped sharply in Iraq.

Series of blasts terrorises, mystifies Karachi

KARACHI, July 7: Terror struck the city six times within an hour on Monday as unknown terrorists triggered a series of blasts that wounded over 50 people, including children and policemen.

The blasts occurred between 7:05pm and 7:50pm, with an interval of eight to 10 minutes, at Banaras Chowk, Orangi Town, Pak Colony and Shahrah-i-Noorjahan.

The DIG of Karachi West, Aleem Jaffery, told Dawn that 41 people were injured in the series of blasts at five places. “No one was killed in the blasts, however,” he added.

Observers and analysts found the serial bomb attack in the provincial capital different from the usual pattern of terrorist strikes in the country. Most of the bombs used were of a low intensity and designed more to spread panic than to cause large-scale human casualty.

Democracy is the Best Revenge? In the great islamic tradition, every thing is the tribal attiotude of revenge and honour. No doubt in a country where honor killing is legal, it is understandable that democracy is a matter of revenge against mushy, against nawaz and others on a personal level.

In an islamic country, there can be no concept of democracy, it has to have a prefix, basic democracy, enlightened democracy ..../ A klalifayat is what the book talks about.

In a country where everything has to eb per sharia, the notion of people ruling is absurd. The govt has to be same as what the book says, or that existed at the time when the laws given in the book made sense.

Jerusalem (PTI): Some 2000 distinguished guests, including Israeli President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, were treated with Indian food at a party thrown by the US Ambassador in Israel, Richard Jones, to celebrate America's Independence Day this weekend.

Israel's curry queen, Reena Pushkarna's 'Tandoori' restaurant was specially called upon to cater to the honoured guests that included some foreign dignitaries.

"It's a great honour. It's the first time that guests at American Independence Day celebrations here were treated to Indian food. It shows the growing acceptance of Indian cuisine across the globe and that it can also serve as a means of diplomacy", Reena told PTI.

'Tandoori' in Tel Aviv has indeed served in promoting diplomatic process in the region as the first location of choice for peace talks between the Israelis, Palestinians and Norwegians.

When BBC telecasted the first handshake between Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian leader Yaser Arafat on the lawns of White House it suddenly showed 'Tandoori' saying that the peace talks did not commence in Jerusalem or in Oslo, but in the Indian restaurant based in Tel Aviv.

A household name in Israel, Reena has been dubbed by the local media as 'the most successful Indian in Israel', 'our beautiful lady of Indian food' and 'India's unofficial cultural envoy to Israel'.

I AM a lecturer by profession, an employee of a college in the capital.

This vacation, I planned to go to the United Kingdom at the insistence of my relatives in the UK. I applied for visa and then came the impossible job for filling the form. With patience I managed to complete it.

After completing all the requirements I paid about Rs10, 000 as visa fee. After 20 days I went to collect my passport. It was strange that the visa was not issued, but the fee was charged.

The very reason for refusing visa was that the British were afraid that I may stay for a longer duration.

Deducting processing fees is justified, but 10,000 is a huge amount of money. I went to the visa office twice and found a kilometre-long line of people standing outside for a visa. I wondered how many of them would lose their money, time and energy if their visa is refused.

It is a thought-provoking moment for our government. We, the Pakistanis, are being bluffed and looted in our own country and the government is doing nothing to protect the rights of the citizens.

Who can answer my query? Does the British commission have any logical answer to it?

The comments to madiha are spot on. Sge should rather write about the life of a paki-US citizen in karachi, rather than a paki in the US. This story has no authenticity, it is not an immigrant story, it is the story of daughter of a US citizen.

Integrity is important when one is tryoing to tell a life story.

Let me check the book, there is no concept of integrity in the book, it is simply obedience, no wonder you canno understand what i am talking about.
