Local Liberal Dribble

Mr. Paracha,

Though I agree with you that the movie leaves a lot to be desired, must say you left out an important aspect of the film in your critic.

The fear on the face of the Pakistani father seeing his daughter resting her head on the shoulder of a gora was the most telling scene of this movie. It reminded me of an interview I had seen of Salman Rushdie. When asked if 'fundamentalism was the root cause of terror', he replied
'no, they both have a common root cause. Fear of sexuality, especially fear of the female as a sexual person in the psyche of some believers.'
The Emerging Threat

Ayesha ji,

Based on reading your article, and many others like yours, I would have to say the picture is becoming very clear.

You have now only two ways to go. Either your country loses the Frontier province, or, all of Pakistan will fall, one town at a time.

I say this based on reading Pakistani papers and interacts on this forum and others. The lack of alarm at this news is alarming. If this was another country, the danger bells will be ringing, but not in Pakistan. People are more concerned about prostitution at this junction.

And, then there is the Catch 22: any leader who would take this threat to the very existance of your country seriously would be branded a US puppy. Any leader who would not, will become an accomplice in the going down of your nation; one tehsil, one zila, one town at a time until the windows are all painted black, and the only legal profession for women would be begging.

Re various on cast..

It is so ironic that the only aspect of the cast system that has not survived is the only aspect it originally had: division of labor. Everything that has been added on is still going on.

dharma ji,

She is not practicing freedom of choice. For that she has to be líberated first. She is aborting her female foetus to please her husband and his mother.

As far as laws are concerned, they are not worth the paper they are written on unless enforced.

Azra ji,

I fail to see the connection between US support for Zia and honor killings in Pakistan.

Even if we were to believe the conspiracy theorists, that US brought Zia to get rid of Bhutto, I am sure honor killings in Pakistan was not part of the deal.

Feroz,

some people maybe mad at you for not following your religion. You did not rob your wife of her identity and pehchan. Your marriage was not yet another excuse for conversation.
Enjoyed this article.

Is it difficult to accept that the only person in recent history accreditted by all major historians to having saved millions of Muslim lives happend to be a skinny, dhoti clad Hindu?
I wonder if there are any other such examples in history?

Another challenge:

Name a single Muslim leader who 'has pretended' to be on a hunger strike to save human lives? (glucose and water n'all)

A challenge:

Name a single Muslim leader who has done a hunger strike to save Muslim lives? (forget about non-Muslims)

dost_mittar ji,

Pakistanis on this forum have said that Dawn 'preaches to the converted'. Let's see if anyone can quote condemnation of this collective barbarism by any Urdu daily. Those are what the people read. And, how do I or you know if there aren't papers who have praised this act of disrespect to human dignity?

Of course Nato will stay in Afghanistan as it should. But not just because of Afghans or Pashtuns but also because they think real danger comes from Pakistan. Unlike what you seem to think, the West knows that jihadi fever goes beyond just Pashtuns. Just read the interacts of the jihadis on this forum. How many are Pashtuns?

Why would a hypocrite go to Wana, when he can interact from the comfort of a living room offered only in a democratic society?

angry jihadi,

when you give the same freedom of expression to your own mother and sisters that you give yourself, you would be considered half honest. Until then you would be a full hypocrite.

A.K. Cheema ji,

'before this 'nishan-e-manzil' can afford to widen its horizons, it needs to get through the next few years to establish some institutional control over its internal affairs; then to address INTERNAL injustices first before embarking upon EXTERNAL adventures.'

I have not read all of your interacts, but based on this one, I have to tell you that you have pinpointed the problem. And, I hope the day never comes where Pakistan has to interfere in the affairs of other nations. It is better to solve its own problems first and then go on becoming even better than that.

May I say that with Pakistanis like you there's hope for your country.

Laddu Sahib,
you got it wrong on all three counts: I am neither Muslim, nor a Mian nor only a humanist.

#285Cheema Sahib,
Excellent post!
