"Lavinia Mannon, daughter of Christine and Ezra stands for Electra, she is tall, flat breasted, angular and imperious in manner,"
"Lavinia now blossoms into a replica of her voluptuous mother" -
I just find it hard to believe. You mean...metaphorically?

hi Shandana, its just what happened here at chowk, I say anything and I heard "you're a FEMINIST!" --lol, so thus, 'apparently its an insult"
-- Though its still an interesting prospect to think of how modernity has hit Pakistan, art, literature and theater has changed everywhere, and NFP at least started recording the movement of some of it, as he says in his introduction. You're right, we're losing him to politics and he's much too good of a writer, isn't he.
Coming back to Feminism, since it started out as a movement it too has undergone changes everywhere, and there is a growing distrust of it as an extremist party.

Well writing is an art, it is never entertainment to any serious reader. -- and the "Reader" ...is that coin by which you realize the real worth of the exchange.
Ok gentlemen [and absent ladies] I hope the terrorists don't come this way again -- [practicing violence against writing is as serious as phsyical violence -- it has very real consequences.]
Perhaps we really have it in us, and we are terrorists.

#7 Akcheema I don't think you are really writing anything -- I think the reason why NFP is unpopular with you men is that he can say things in a way, you all can't. (damn it!)Well writing is an art, it is never entertainment to any serious reader. -- and the "Reader" ...is that coin by which you realize the real worth of the exchange.

"voice was violent, physical, aggressive, non-caring."
--what about this seems 'happy at the prospect?"
and no, I got ready never to hear it again. No one speaks like that to me -- period.
It actually made me realize the tons of feelings you can go through within a space of a second -- I have never been able to understand why men have to shout at women to show that they can dominate. [And psychological violence is a big theme for me, it comes up time and again in my writing.]
I'm looking forward to seeing more women comment here. I say this at the awful prospect of being labelled a feminist, which is apparently an insult -- welcome to Pakistan 2008

--it is a tiring activity to talk to the 'moderates' -- what is that anyway...someone who never dares speak, only suffers, and that too, 'moderately' haha the moderates are my favorite people as they listen so politely, like they're really interested.
"It won't work. Fanaticism is one of the most prominent expressions of an irrational mind. The religious fanatic's mental make-up is quite like that of a deeply embedded cult member's. It is like a brain maliciously washed clean and bearing no capability whatsoever for rational thought."
These are the best lines for me, you got me interested (for the first time) in the fanatics. (haha) "the fanatics" who are you people? "we are the fanatics" lol...
I remember the first time I had an encounter with that mind, we were on a school trip to Lahore having a great time..and suddenly this man approached us...with a glint of what in his eyes? red? anger? against who? or what? He wanted us to cover our heads, but the disrespect with which he spoke...is something I can never forget. His voice was violent, physical, aggressive, non-caring.

Nadeem, very good points about the emphasis on "psychological" not just ideological -- these past few years I've confronted this discipline, its brought me to my senses, I think we all suffer from this or that, from time to time...don't we?
I love the way your writing can make us laugh, actually, its quite something -- somehow I don't find it cruel, but that's maybe because I like German poetry now.

I liked the bit about the Azan ...he was psychologically destroyed ...and he just didn't care about anything anymore.
I like how you delicately handle the words about the rape, and challenge with the 'girlfriends, sex, alcohol' -- sensitive.
