Life of Pi

Topic started by storyteller on Jan 5, 2005 10:55:21 am

i finished this book last week and after a period of strange, regressive behavior feel well enough to take a closer look.

which version do you believe?
the one with the beheaded mother or..
the one with the tiger on tiny boat...plus hyena
plus zebra and big monkey..

is this a true story...i mean does piscine molitar patel exist?

i believe the one with the beheaded mother was what really happened. the animals were symbolic as per the conclusions of the japanese investigators.

whats this?
i wanted to write an ilog and see that i’m not in the index anymore.
its true that i deleted all my old ilogs because i didn’t like seeing how self absorbed i was....and who’s to know if i wouldn’t have deleted the one i was about to write. it was to be an exercise in writing without any ’’i’s’’. and here we are with 6, 7, lord, 8 ’’i’s’’.

i’ll just crawl back under my rock now.

sorry t, didn’t see your question.

i think i’m writing one. the parts i don’t like are on paper, and the rest is in my head. so it could be a while before its coherent.

so how come there are no love poems on the frontpage to commemorate the yearly self perpetuating delusion of stuffed bears, bad candy and .....no, thats it......so, how come?

that is a fascinating thought, story teller, and I will have to think about it!!

yes t, my friend was telling me about that. apparently someone was writing a book about a person lost at sea with a panther and mr. martel’s book would probably make it look like the B grade hindi movie reproduction of a hollywood flick.

apart from the main content, i thought the book gave me a whole new take on zoos ..... and what he had to say about agnostics was very interesting too.

you know nb, the other day i was at the library and when i saw the book on the shelf i couldn’t help checking it out again. its just sitting on my bookshelf. i remember a movie in which mel gibson is this messed up ex cia or fbi operative and one of the ways the govrnment keeps its eye on such lose canons is that they implant this urge in him to procure a copy of ’’one flew over the cuckoos nest’’ or some such book. so even when he’s on the run, he buys himself that book and then ofcourse the hover crafts appear out of nowhere and the guy is caught.

so you see, maybe this book is a way to flag certain kinds of individuals. what kind, you ask.
i’m still working on that one.

I felt thirsty and tired and scared reading it at times. It must be a good book!B)

chalakoo;)

khair ...recall when the book came out first the author being grilled for ’’incorporating’ some other book or story ... just short of plagiarism allegations...

you know t, what you see in a mirror is what that thing looks like if you were looking at it from the wrong end. like reading words off the wrong side of a page.
just another twist to add to yours...........enough to exorcise this thread of any materialists.

alright nb, the book is Pi’s reality.......but i’m telling you, there is a tiger with a fine upstanding name marking his territory on the wrong continent.
’’disorienting’’ - a very good word to describe this book.

I agree, there is no ’true’ version, it’s only reality as experienced by Pi. If you’re asking, was it based on actual events in an actual life, I don’t think so. It was a strange, disorienting book.

s-t:

remember the short ditty about the ’mirror of truth’ breaking and folks picking up small pieces of it and thinking what they see in it is the truth? (it is somewhere on chowk)

if you feel this is true then it is a reflection of the truth in you...the shard of truth...in storyteller...

now...let’s add some twists...what you see...what one sees in the mirror is a ’reflection’ of the reality...but in reality it is an illusion...so when reality is illusion and illusion a reality then is truth a reality or illusion...ok....i think the bus is there...and the water is on the boil...and yes, welcome back bspnd and keep the keyboard brewing;)

alright then....i BELIEVE that it is a true story and ofcourse..there is that tiger running around a mexican jungle.

and if it isn’t why would the author go to such extents as to thank fictitious people....i mean, thats just playing with the readers.
thats wrong...no one should do that.
and how can someone write a book like that and be capable of taking those extra steps to toy with the emotions of a reader who ....

okay......(breath in ..breath out)
when you start a book, you enter the writers landscape. sometimes you abandon your own thoughts and ideas and embrace the author’s completely (ie, if the author is any good). now, why would mr. martel spin his beautiful yarn and then fool you into wondering if its true. okay, so he’s a genius but ...
this amazing ride he takes you through.....
i’m telling you...
its got to be true.

Not a true story. The genius of Jan Martel lies in making us believe that this is a true story.

As far as your second question goes, there is no one true version. You can choose to believe either one. Or you can believe different version depending on your mood at a given time.
