Silent Waters. Dir: Sabiha Sumar

Topic started by Raw_Dust on Sep 30, 2005 1:33:18 pm

a very conservative film in its exploration of Pakistan Army sponsored ’’Islam’’ as one of the protagonist coming to a pakistani village. But then, it tries to pack too many overarching themes in one film that comes in the way of watching it.

There is excellent production and photography and the look of the film is like any top of the line european film or iranian. Unsurprising then to see a dozen of european agencies listed as producers even Embassy of Netherlands in Pakistan is one of the donors.

There are a few shots of i think, the area around Cirose Cinema, Pir Wadhai and Murree Road in Pindi. The film also have glimpses from Panja Sahib in Hasan Abdal.

I am not sure about the punjabi dialect of the villagers in the film but it sounded similar to punjabi one would hear in Pindi and Wah Cantt areas.

and mira nair godawful? those are fighting words!!!! have you ever noticed how deepa mehta and mira nair could probably be sisters. . .not twins, but there’s a resemblance (and it’s not in their movies)

note of caution:
this film is not for islamist-yuppies, as much as it was dumbed-down by the makers on their quest of perhaps avoiding the fatwa-noose around their necks, the film tries precariously once or twice to get close to the unspeakable like when the protagonist asked disgruntled about whether she was gonna end up in a muslim heaven or a sikh heaven or perhaps in worst of both the hells .... that was brave and without bating the camera-eye further, director rushed to the next situation. i could only sympathize with the director.

Stuka:
i like that film was done in punjabi that was perhaps one of the best thing about the film unlike the pretentious deepa mehta and godawful mira nair, sabiha sumar’s debut film seemed to have alot of heart and sincerity, imo. But overall, i think themes could have been done with more intensity.

I saw it thru Netflix. Yeah, you are right about the multiple themes, but Ii thought they did a good job of tying them together. I liked the fast forward to 2002 in the end.

I heard it got nominated and might even have won a coupla’ awards.
Some new TV actors from Pak private channels are also featured in
this movie. One of them was being interviewed and he said that he
was mystified why such a critically acclaimed Pak movie wasn’t yet
released over there.

I also recall some Govt officials castigating this movie, as another
’evil’ NGO propaganda movie.

Will have to see it now.
