i read all three of nick hornbys books - about a boy- long way down and -being good this last week... didnt much enjoy ’being good’ but the other two were nice... has anyone here red him? i also got done with leo africanus by amin malouf which was lovely... tried to read dreams by najuib mafouz but theres too much philosophy in there... he’s at his best when he talks about the gallis and drama of cairo

what, are you reading?

I picked-up Train To Pakistan by Khushwant Singh, with all the traditional
reservations about any indian work on Pakistan, esp partition. I thought
it’s be littered with the regrets of an old Sikh, about how some baby and his
mother were able to dodge his dagger ’n spear and escape to safety ’cross
the border. I wanted this book to confirm my prejudices.

I couldn’t put the book down, and read it from cover-to-cover.

The book painted a landscape and characters that one would want to
believe existed, before partition. That defied recorded history and later
word-of-mouth. By the end of the book, he had me cheering for the Sikh
who is risking his life, to cut the rope over the train carrying his beloved!.

Now that’s good writing. He almost had me believing...

I have three books on my sidetable and I can’t seem to get to any of them.
One Sylvia Plath, one Ayn Rand and one Robin Cook mystery. :)
