Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter and....Spring

Kim Ki-Duk’s korean film about a monk and a young child living with him was a subtle tale of the cycle of life. It goes through the life and times of the young child becoming a man and then becoming a monk himself by the end of the movie.

The landscape and direction was beautiful and the entire film scenery is based on a single lake in the Korean mountains.

It is amazing how much depth the asian cinema has and how far better they are at telling tales which have universal themes. The same depth can be found literally everywhere in filmmaking asian countires including vietnam, thailand and offcourse the large power houses of asian cinema such as china/HK, Japan and others. Even if we look towards the Middle east we have shining examples such as Iran & Lebanon/Palestine.

The most unfortunate thing is however that we have the second largest film industry in the subcontinent (Wont even mention Pakistani films as they are just piffle) and all they make is hundreds upon hundreds of real meaningless Sh**. The Quality of films and storylines are similiar in most aspects and there is very little depth in Indian cinema with the exception of the a very small independent art movie scene. Why is it that we are so different in our approach towards filmmaking as compared to our eastern cousins?

Good question. Just brainstorming here-
1- A censor board that is much more normative.
2- A target audience (of arty cinema)that is prolly more accessible to Western Cinema and English language.
3- An industry crippled by mafia links and piracy.
4- The dispersion of talent in various vernacular cinema.
5- A (prolly) better developed cable television
That said, I guess every year a few movies are churned out from India that are pretty good. Not from Bollywood though.
