Against The Day

... and the book’s title is confirmed:

Against The Day

(this is a fake blurb)

“Spanning the period between the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893 and the years just after World War I, this novel moves from the labor troubles in Colorado to turn-of-the-century New York, to London and Gottingen, Venice and Vienna, the Balkans, Central Asia, Siberia at the time of the mysterious Tunguska Event, Mexico during the Revolution, postwar Paris, silent-era Hollywood, and one or two places not strictly speaking on the map at all.

With a worldwide disaster looming just a few years ahead, it is a time of unrestrained corporate greed, false religiosity, moronic fecklessness, and evil intent in high places. No reference to the present day is intended or should be inferred.”

’’A number of frail girls . . . prisoners in the top room of a circular tower, embroidering a kind of tapestry which spilled out the slit windows and into a void, seeking hopelessly to fill the void: for all the other buildings and creatures, all the waves, ships and forests of the earth were contained in this tapestry, and the tapestry was the world.’’

RD:

Some of the lines were pretty cool. The Orwellian Big Bro element is briefly captured to send the chills. Worth a watch. Yes, the plot was forcibly overstretched in the latter half.

rozaiba: i hope not. although, V is a pynchon book and the title might have a reference to it... i heard, film is great if watched mute... plot wise, it is absurd and stupid.. or maybe supposed to be riffing on other things.. i dunno .. i havent seen it..

So V for Vendetta was based on his novel?

swarrier: yea..! gravity’s rainbow is packed with mindblowing prose like the one below here is another of my fav. passage, i found - thanks to google..

Hunched Dracula-like in his Burberry overcoat, Roger drives Jessica to a dognapping job. He is the dour young statistician of the White Visitation, the spider hitching together his webs of numbers. Against the flips of the Zener cards, he calculates standardized Kill Rates Per Ton for the bomber groups. Tonight’s quarry will be subjected to ether, as all the others have, and sought in the holes and spaces of the War. The man and woman have met in ’’a cute meet,’’ but by the time one has pulled one’s nth victim out of a pile of rubble, one is ready for love. They shack up. It is marginal, hungry, chilly --most times they’re too paranoid to risk a fire-- but it’s something they want to keep, so much so that to keep it they will take on more than propaganda has ever asked them for. They are in love. Fuck the war.

Never read Pynchon, but that’s a beautiful paragraph. Especially the last sentence. Such a change from badly written and even worse thought out technical standards.

’’It’s been a prevalent notion. Fallen sparks. Fragments of vessels broken at the Creation. And someday, somehow, before the end, a gathering back to home. A messenger from the Kingdom, arriving at the last moment. But I tell you there is no such message, no such home -- only the millions of last moments . . . nothing more. Our history is an aggregate of last moments.’’
