Blood Simple (1984)

Topic started by Faizan on Sep 2, 2006 11:44:54 pm

The Coens know human nature the way they know their movies. These avant garde filmakers of great cinematic expressionism take any genre and fuse it with an odd yet intriguing signature novelty, all their own. The plot in ’Blood Simple’ is the basic nuts and bolts of a crime thriller (or even noir). There is a plan involving the jealousy of a raging husband (Dan Hedaya), the intent to murder his unfaithful wife (Francis McDormand, in her terrific debut) and her lover, followed by an elaborate coverup; the plan obviously goes wrong, and it needs to be fixed. Double crosses turn to triple crosses and the wrong people get killed, but part of the fun is seeing how. Features genuine surprises that make you jump and which literally spring out of nowhere (watch out for a rolled up newspaper that is thrown by the paperboy and hits the meshed enterance door of a house as two people are shown arguing from the inside, standing near that very door!). By the time it reaches its heart pounding showdown, it registerS itself in my book as the best Coen brothers film, surpassing even the beauty of ’The man who wasn’t there’. Superb score by Coen’s regular Carter Burwell.

there is a one take shot of a chase sequence around the alleyways of a phoenix suburb in Raising Arizona. It is one of the best. do check it out whenever you get around to it.

RD: I’m on a Coen’s streak and next on my list are both Lebowski and Hudsucker Proxy. I have yet to get hold of a copy of Barton Fink, but should soon enough.

Blood Simple is set in Austin, Texas - it has a noticeable Western aura to it, but the more I think about it, the more I realise that it is one of the finest neo noirs, certainly the best since the seminal ’Chinatown’ and one that held the crown admirably well till ’L.A. Confidential’ was released late 90’s. But really, I have very rarely seen a debut done with such a strong sense of assurity.

this is one of coen brothers that for some reason i have not seen. Coen’s most fun is - and you would agree with me - is Big Lebowski. There is something very extraordinary about placing the narrative hook outside of The Dude’s story and into LA with that cowboy character. really good.

What did you think of Barton Fink? that’s their best imo. Their goofing on Faulkner was so funny.

is Blood Simple rooted in a named place? a city, maybe? given Coen Brothers’ tendency of using places as wrappers
