Brick (2006)

Topic started by Faizan on Sep 6, 2006 5:09:33 am

Part of the charm of watching ’Brick’ is the premise itself. Noir in high school. The dialogues don’t make literal sense...but they make sense in context of what is happening when it is being said. The film is drenched in mood and intrigue, but the main storyline isn’t really deserving of it - the urgency of the setting is tarnished by high school drug pushers and pregnant teenagers. I could never take the entire setup with any seriousness. Two other (non-consequential) problems; the lead Gordon-Levitt passes out too many times (Bogey was never such a wuss) and the kids never really seem to be in class (not that it matters, but still). Ends on a perfect noir note...girl turns out bad (shades of Mary Astor from the classic ’The big sleep’;) and the world weary, wisecracking detective turns her in. Case of a movie where the trailer is actually more impressive than the film.

RD...The director is indeed one to watch out for. He made a short film before this, I have a link for it somewhere....will paste it later when I find it.

brick was a great fukkin’ film. story wasnt ’the’ thing. infact, more of an excuse to drive everything around so the characters can exist in ’style’. it has some loopy editing and snappy lines. this guy is definitely woth to follow for what he makes next. i wish the meta aspect of film could’ve been enginnered better in the sense the noir and highschool templates were combined together but it’s prolly one of the hardest things to pull off.
