A clockwork Orange (1971)

A clockwork Orange:

Can violence be cured? What would you do if you were incapable of reacting in anger, hatred or desire - passionate behaviors that if taken to the extreme can do much harm. In answering that question, involving the story of young violent, sexually unrestrained Alex, who is imprisoned and then experimented on to cure him of his malice, so hard hitting is the effect of this film, and so well executed are the efforts of Kubrick that the audience is revolted into submission by it’s powerful view-ability. Malcolm McDowell (bearing a remarkable likeness to Ewan McGregor) does an extraordinary job at portraying the dementia required from this role (‘I’m singing in the rain…….’;). Violent, dark, extremely well made and demanding great personal insight after it has ended, this is Kubrick at his confrontational and controversial best. Highlighting the use of some absolutely splendid long takes, trademark facial close-ups and an unusual psychedelic synthesized soundtrack, the only drawback to the film is that it is easy to be put off by the realistic mix of unwatchable sexuality (rape scenes of sadistic viciousness) and random cruelty.
