. Violent, dark, extremely well made and demanding great personal insight after it has ended, this is Kubrick at his confrontational and controversial best. Highlighting the use of some absolutely splendid long takes, trademark facial close-ups and an unusual psychedelic synthesized soundtrack, the only drawback to the film is that it is easy to be put off by the realistic mix of unwatchable sexuality (rape scenes of sadistic viciousness) and random cruelty.
