Good night & Good luck (2005)

Good night and good luck:

I dont think Clooney had any idea when GN&GL was first released late last year, that the political and social climate would change such that the world would be debating the magnitude to which freedom of speech should be allowed. And this is a film that tackles some portion of that debate tactfully. In telling the story of a news crew working for CBS and covering the irrational Mcarthy scandal during the mid 50’s in the US, it hits no false notes and transcends the medium of mere entertainment more efficiently than ’Syriana’ was able to do, with one third less running time.

Not to discount the importance of that other Clooney film, but GN&GL is much superior, in terms of its direction, coherence and yes performances. David Strathairn here has shades of the convinction I have only seen in a actor like Ben Kingsley (and incidentally the two worked together to great effect in the underseen, early 90’s spy caper ’Sneakers’;). As Ed Murrow, Strathairn disappears into the role and is a character of another time and another place. As a director Clooney finally earns my long overdue respect in this arena of film production. I can only remember one other film that lovingly created a long gone time with such innocence and reverence and that was Spielberg’s masterfully made ’Catch me if you can’. Relevant and rivetting.

Oceans 13 has Al (Woo haa) Pacino.

Should be priceless seeing him barking like a maniac onscreen and making sparks fly with his partner from ’Sea of love’ (thats late 80’s ’Basic Instinct’;).

So I saw the film. It was beautiful. It really was. the way it begins with that nice soft music and everyone is smoking and talking. I loved the line when he says, ’’The terror is in this room.’’ That was powerful. I liked that cigeret commercial!!The film is so soft to watch, there is nice music, there is no blood shed or shouting or screaming. but you can feel the fear and tension and the idealism and heroism. very nice. good for Clooney. He needed that after the batman movie. I have a feeling he is going to make Oceans 13 and throw in Samuel Jackson who is always available.

look, with due respect, i cannot disagree enough. I was referring to the ’Debate’ that’d produce legislation to curb freespeech when it comes to Mohammad in the West. That is not gonna happen, no matter how much muslims feel offended. The so-called debate on internet or on op-eds of various newspapers got zilch value.

RD, I diagree....there is no such thing as absolute freedom of speech. It is a misnomer. I don’t want to go back and rekindle the memory of what happened with the Danish cartoons early this year, but that should be reason enough to debate the premise.

well, ’’the magnitude to which freedom of speech should be allowed’’.. is not up for debate at all and never was..

this is a really good film specially the change of flux between onair/offair sequences....

Definately going to see this one. Heard so many good things about it. Syriana is also very good though. Its highly moving the way the Pakistani boys are portrayed. Small things like, french fries, and soccer are used to pull them into destruction. It is very very sad to watch a young human full of life hope and humor who likes Spider man and plays cricket, and to watch someone like that just take his own life. And the great thing about Syriana was that they show so many oppressive forces acting on this one young boy. The Saudis treat him like shit. The corporation humiliates his father. The culture of Islam is distant because its in Arabic. Education is a luxury. His own country is poor and far away. How can anyone specialy a teenager stand up to so many forces? I came out of the film feeling a bit responsible for all that is happening.
