Chungking Express (1994)

Topic started by Faizan on Oct 9, 2006 1:39:54 am

Chungking Express:

When a person falls out of a relationship with someone there is a vacuum of desperate longing that needs to be filled. In that fleeting moment of realising you are now alone/single, your thoughts are once again all your own. This entire movie feels that way, and its a great feeling wallowed in self pity and everyday mundaneness. On seeing it now I can clearly understand that other, lesser movies were influenced by the uniqueness of this - including the underwhelming ’Lost in translation’. There are 2 stories here, both told from shifting POV’s of the main characters, which intricately overlap at street vendors called Chungking Express - think of this as what Pulp Fiction would be if it were a love story. Director Kar Wai Wong deserves much praise for making a heartfelt film thats romantic without being cheesy or melodramatic.

yea.. but i was talking of tony leung’s character looking at faye wong’s character .. that came back again in a later film in a different setting with same actors... you’ll know it when you see it.

The ’California dreaming’ technique (where the same song plays again and again) was a technique also used in absolutely sublime ’3-iron’ where an Arabic song kept playing everytime the 2 characters met.

another greatt film.. two things: cassavettes’ Gloria in the first story and
the ’california dreaming’ sequence at the burgershop which would play itself again in one of his later films though without the song and just the movements...
