Why ’Khakee’ and not ’Khaki’?

Topic started by khakiflash on Dec 29, 2006 6:40:45 am

Can anyone tell me why the title of the 2004 Santoshi film was (in English translation) spelt with double ’e’ and not the conventional way? I know that around the change of 19th/20th centuries the word was sometimes spelt with 2 ’e’s (pace sometimes in Kipling) but as it’s well known that in the Indian press, for example, the police are regularly referred to as ’the men in khaki’ (equivalent, I suppose to the British ’boys in blue’;)
it seems rather odd that they opted for a virtually archaic spelling.
My own particular interest is that, having had the nickname of ’Khaki’ since I was a boy scout many years ago, (before being ignominiously and totally unjustly expelled with a severe caning on the backside - my laugh-it-off phrase for the incident was ’I joined the scouts as a tenderfoot - I left the scouts with a tender bum!’ The mental scars have lasted throughout my life, but that’s another story.) But I have retained and always spelt my nickname with an ’i’, so if it’s good enough for me, why not also for Santoshi & co.?

Some stupid astrologer must have dabbled in numerology and come up with the idea that this combination of letters would guarantee a hit. Film personalities are great believers in these savants. See how the spellings of the names change as time moves on.
