This is a great movie. I have not seen it in some time but it was one of Visconti’s really good movies. Set in Italy at a time when Garibaldi was unifying it it chronicles a nobleman, Don Salina (The Prince) who compares the people of Sicily to Leopards and Sheep. It was brought to mind due to a discussion I had with Raw_Dust.
There is a Criterion Collection DVD out which brings the original Italian movie to the US. It was released here when it premiered but it was butchered for the US and horribly dubbed.

swarrier: no visconti yet. i got all of ’em lined up though. guy madden had a dracula adaptation, the other mahler based i was gonna see in the very very near future. i forget what’s it’s called but he used mahler’s second and the whole thing is like a silent movie. Mahler is the man!

Did you see ’’Death in Venice’’, based on the Thomas Mann novella? That was directed by Visconti too.

It was great , I thought Dirk Bogarde was really good. And the background music had Mahler’s compositions. There was a funny anecdote about it that Bogarde related in his autobiography.
