Babel

A very depressing film. That whole ’we are all connected’ thing did not do it for me. It all looks very realistic though.

Direction wise The movie Babel is a masterpiece but i agree story wise the movie lacks strength and on the whole it feels too long and a bit of a drag. what do u guys think about The Good Shepherd??

I enjoyed Letters from Iwo Jima more because I just got involved in the story of the main character, Saigo. So it was easier for me to connect. Flags of our Fathers was excellent but the burden of guilt or the stress of the situation is shared by three guys, who deal with it differently. So its difficult to connect with them as strongly.

Minhaj...i saw Iwo Jima and found flags to be the better of the two. What did you think?

I saw Flags of our Fathers and I loved it. Please do not read the following if you have not seen the movie.

The first scene in which the sailor falls into the ocean and they just fucking leaving him!! And this guy goes, ’so much for no man left behind’ just shocked me into paying more attention because from then onwards you know that you don’t know what can happen in this film. And the last scene when they all go swimming and they are splashing and floating fooling around. connected us to them. And I loved the philosophy expressed very clearly and plainly that heros are something ’we create’ because we have this ’need.’ Clint Eastwood (T). He just fucked the whole G.I. JOE culture.

This is the director’s least successful, least involving film. 21 grams - far more depressing, gruesome and realistic, is the real winner, though his first film in Mexican, ’Ammores Perros’ is probably his most ambitious. Together they are referred to as the trilogy of death, though ’Babel’ betrays this theme with a cop out, nonsensical ending!

I have no idea why the film has landed near universal critic acclaim, while his two other films have been overlooked. Even the music (by Gustavo whathisname...) is recycled work from Ridley Scott’s ’Insider’ and it went to win an Academy award for best score!!!

Still, I’m glad the Mexican’s have invaded Hollywood. Between Innaratu, Cuaron (Children of men) and Del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) you will find some of the finest cinematic work today and I hope these guys continue to raise the bar higher.
