Des exists in Karnatic music. It is called Kedara Gaula. According to a person a I know if the raga notes are the same they could have been arrived at independently or moved into either stream at a very early time. Ragas migrating either way nowadays retain the same name like Hamsadhwani, Charukeshi etc.

So I doubt if the Raga itself moved recently. However the chances are that singing/performing styles may in the future cross pollinate.

warrier, i got stuck in a mallu gathering the other day and one aunty sang something which sounded like pure des. so i asked her if its a karnatic..she said no, its hindustani but some more modern carnatic compositions are in hindustani imports

Good. I was a little disconcerted by his inflection at times. I had not heard Manavati being performed in a Hindustani context.
