Writing: Few Thoughts

In the past few weeks I have posted three articles on chowk at a time when I felt it urgent. The first pertained to the 'Law of Necessity' in which I argued that this expediency never ran its full course in Pakistani history. Though rubber stamp courts were eager to invoke this law, they never monitored the progress of raison de etre of such rulings. As a result, the benefiting dictators had a license to kill. There was no response to this essay and a fortnight later another necessity was invoked. I am still amazed why no one at chowk could pick the cardinal message that the essay tried to convey.

The second essay pertained to the Emergency. It was an essay based on the constitutional crises of the country and how the COMBINED had, and were butchering institutions. Written within the premise of constitutional democracy, it was a realization of the dangers in which the Military- Political Complex of Pakistan was peddling. This was an essay that flowed out of my heart but had a lukewarm response.

The third pertained to the mindset in Pakistan Army. Wow! As if I had touched a hornet’s nest. In this essay I stated the military point of view with as few aberrations on my part as possible. I had a tough time explaining. The army was singled out even by an ex serviceman for every ill that haunts Pakistan.

This leads me to the conclusion. Are most of us only involved in day to day trivialities and brownie points, or is there something beyond that we can perceive, analyze and grasp.

There are very strong views on restoration of democracy, rule of law and accountability. All these views are coming from desktops with parlor doors shut. The reality is that all politicians lest Imran are ready to participate in the elections. The rules of game they apply are not normative. They are into too much of reality and have stakes in the system. I can just say what I wrote in 1997:

Mera raqeeb meray ander hai
Mera wajood mera dushman hai
Mein apne aap se jang mein hoon
Meri halat, meray watan si hai

flag objectionable content
