'Pa k committed to IPI project'

ISLAMABAD:
Pakistan on Tuesday told Iran it was committed to the multi-million dollar gas
pipeline project also involving India and hoped an agreement would be reached
soon so that work could start on the venture.




During a telephonic
conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki, new Foreign
Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said Islamabad is committed to the
Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project as it is important for Pakistan's
economy.




Qureshi expressed the
hope that "all concerned will reach an agreement on early commencement of the
project", said a statement from the Foreign Office.




He told Mottaki, who
telephoned him to congratulate him on assuming office, that Pakistan believed
Iran, as a member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, has the "right to
acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes".





Pakistan "believes that
(Iran's nuclear) issue should be addressed within the framework of the
International Atomic Energy Agency", Qureshi said.




In a separate telephonic
conversation with Afghan Foreign Minister Rangin Dadfar Spanta, Qureshi said the
close relationship between the two countries is important for maintaining
regional peace and stability.




Terrorism threatens Pakistan
and Afghanistan and it is "important for both countries to closely cooperate in
the war against terror", he said.





Qureshi also said the Pakistan
government is committed to the jirga process initiated by Pakistan and
Afghanistan in August last year.




Pakistan encourages
people-to-people contacts between the two countries and is also looking forward
to hosting the third Regional Economic Cooperation Conference on Afghanistan
during April 24-25, he said.
