’’It runs in the family’’ is sweet. One of the finest movies of the last year was ’’Real women have curves.’’ You guys will like me trust me on it. Both movies are madly hilarious too.

’pather panchali’ by Satyajit Ray. his finest work. honest and very down-to-earth look at rural bengali community.
’dreams’ by Akira Kurosawa. must watch!
’blood of hussain’ by Jamil Dehlavi. aisa kaam bhi kabhi hoowa hai pakistan main.

and on a lighter note... ’kal hoa na hoa’ just for that 1 odd minute when the tapori character ’guru’ appears. ’naina bolay toa?’ and ’kai koa chillum chilloo karti hai ray?’ were hilarious dialogues:))

saw Raising Victor Vargas the other night . . . the love story is sweet but what i liked about it was the way it let me into the lives of its characters. they were believable people, their hurt palpable, particularly the grandmother who you just wanted to get up and hug (jaadu ki jhappi).

---

they were just showing ET on star movies. wow! wonderful film :)

if Koyaanisqatsi (Hopi Indian word meaning Life Out of Balance (1983) and Powaqqatsi (Life in Transformation (1988) both Directed by Godfrey Reggio with an excellent musical scores by Phillip Glass are a yardstick than you would enjoy Naqoyqatsi (Life as War)(2002) by the same team...fhk mentioned it is playing in the KaraFest...

The series of image and accompanying musical score makes for a rare treat…the mind races, aches, numbs….it is a totally different experience..do not miss it

And if you like this see the other two…also:

Baraka (1992) Directed by Ron Fricke is another visual treat that is not to miss...and anticipating your question, perhaps, have no idea where you would be able to find them in Karachi…

most desi people i know proclaim how turned off they are with indian movies but i’ve noticed that some do get very unnecessarily affected by them. for instance many years ago, an older lady in my family, upon losing her only child ( a grown man who i think died of depression and i’m sure that could happen) was told to watch as many indian movies as possible to keep herself in high spirits. this is surely in the pre-prozac days but i guess it worked. in recent times my mother watches baghban and suddenly misses me and this is so not my mom. then another friend of mine, who is a very content lady, with a very good family, watches baghban too and suddenly feels very unappreciated and unloved. then my little brother, sensing my blues, tells me to go watch kal ho na ho. it apparently cheered up some folks back home. i watch that movie and get more depressed. whats with all that fairy-tale, too good to be true bullshit anyway!? i guess you can take the desi out of bollywood but you can’t take the bollywood out of the desi.

It may be a regular Indian fare, but I loved the crispness and spontaneity of the script in ’Kal Ho Naa Ho’. Otherwise too, pretty cute movie. Nice, light humor.

I had a bet with a friend that it’d make me cry. She lost. I laughed.

yes Samina. I wrote some comments on Woody Allen on paper and then I scanned it, but the image does not upload successfuly. I was trying to blend in the beauty of my hand writing with modern technology. But it is not working out. Listen Hanah & Her Sisters is probably his best film. In my opinion it is. Another one is Husbands & Wives. Annie Hall is another great film. Imagine in 1975 this guy was making excellent jokes. But where would he be without Diane Keaton? I love her in Annie Hall. She is cute and nervouse. The way she swings the wooden tennis racket as she talks him! hahaha But look at Allen. instead of getting stuck on some tired note, he made Small Time Crooks. What an entertaining film that is! And what about Mighty Aphrodite? He is the greatest Cinema Philosopher who treated the screen as if it were a window into human nature and society. Sometimes there is almost a voyeuristic feel to the films. Specially in Husbands & WIves you feel that the you have walked into a living room and the people cant see you because the acting is so natural, the dialogue is so flowy and so real. It is theater without the theatrical exagerations. It is fantastic.

saw Tehzeeb this evening. not the best film in the world but it’s something. shabana azmi’s excellent, urmila’s good (for a change), though arjun rampal and diya mirza should only be seen not heard.

woody really isn’t for everyone though. . .but it really is all about observations, and analysis (tons of analysis), and plenty of neuroticism. . .and being a neurotic myself, that’s what i can appreciate about woody allen flims (plus the humor of course).
