sufism

Topic started by Cobra on May 7, 2008 1:31:26 pm

I heard this term here, on chowk, for the first time.

What is a definition of sufism. Is that an ideology or a path or sect or religion (i.e. does follow the same basic tenets as islam?)

What is the relationship between Sufism and dargah and Urs. Are any of those events/places considered un-Islamic?

What is the difference between a sufi and a darwesh? Do strict adherents of Islam have preference of one over other?

For serious discussion only...............

The word “Sufism” was known at the time of the Messenger or the Sahaabah or the Taabi’een ? It arose at the time when a group of ascetics who wore wool (“soof”) emerged, and this name was given to them. It was also said that the name was taken from the word “soofiya” (“sophia”) which means “wisdom” in Greek. The word is not derived from al-safa’ (“purity”) as some of them claim, because the adjective derived from safa’ is safaa’i, not soofi (sufi). The emergence of this new name and the group to whom it is applied exacerbated the divisions among Muslims. The early Sufis differed from the later Sufis who spread bid’ah (innovation) to a greater extent and made shirk in both minor and major forms commonplace among the people, as well as the innovations against which the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) warned us when he said, “Beware of newly-invented things, for every newly-invented thing is an innovation and every innovation is a going-astray.” (Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said it is saheeh hasan). Do we really need any tareeqahs to follow ISLAM ?

hmmm interesting,

"While all Muslims believe that they are on the pathway to God and will become close to God in Paradise - after death and after the "Final Judgment" - Sufis believe as well that it is possible to become close to God and to experience this closeness - while one is alive. [5] The chief aim of all Sufis then is to let go of all notions of duality, including a conception of an individual self, and to realize the Divine unity."

This is what wiki has to say

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sufism

"Sufi Orders or Sufi Brotherhoods are traditionally known as Tariqa. They may be associated with Sunni Islam or Shia Islam, though the major ones, such as the Qādirī and Naqšhbandī orders, are associated with traditional Sunni Islam and are accepted by the majority of 'folk Muslims'."

If that is true then sufis are sunnis correct?
