Atif and the famous dhamoRhi

Topic started by dullabhatti on May 7, 2008 1:47:18 pm

dhamoRhi = is a small biting insect commonly found in Punjab

There is the story of a Molvi Rehmat who lived in this small village near Lahore few hundred years ago. Molvi was a young kid when he left home to go with badshahi lashkars. Molvi Rehmat was a a sharp kid, so he quickly picked up on Persian and Arabic, the languages of the ruling class of those days. He became very good at Persian and when he got older he only spoke Persian in day to day life. He spent long years in service of the Mughals and in older days moved back to his village.

In the village, now retired Molvi saab, wanted to do some service and also keep himself busy so he would go to the village masjid and teach young kids Arabic and Quran. But he did all that only speaking Persian and Arabic. Other than that he did not talk to common folks of the village because he thought of them as below his station. he never indulged in any idle talk with anyone. In fact no one ever heard him speak something that they could understand. everything he said was in Persian or Arabic. for them as if he did not have voice. general consesus was that he does not speak.

One day Molvi saab in his white pathani clothes and flowing white was sitting on the floor on a large galeecha in the masjid courtyard teaching the kids. he as usual was very engrossed in the lesson and did not notice when a small "dhamoRhi" moved up his shalwar and reached his crotch. Kids were all silent and pretending to understand Molvi saab's lesson, very quiet class room environment.... that then the dhamoRhi bit Molvi saab in the crotch. for a split second Molvi saab cringed in pain and yelled: "oye teri bhain di lann..aahhh." As molvi saab yelled in pain all the kids heard Molvi saab's words, got up from the class in shock and ran to the streets. People outside asked, what happened? what happened?...kids said "Molvi saab bol paye, molvi saab bol paye...."

so my friend Atif, I am glad that the famous "dhamoRhi" has found its way to your shalwaar also. usually we Punjabis are very ignorant of our heritage, we piss on ourselves in the darkness of our low self esteem but once in a way, there is a Molvi Rehmat and dhamoRhi episode.

shaala long live dhamoRhis...
