DM Sahib,
In general, the impression that I am forming about modern Hinduism is that "modern" Hindus, especially upper-caste Hindus, don't really believe in the religious teachings or dogmas of their faith. Instead, they identify with the aspect of Hinduism that gives them elevation, power, and prestige in the caste-based totem pole of Hinduism. 8-|

tulsidas ramayan is very different in tone from valmiki.
i saw the temple in varanasi where tulsidas is supposed to have seen hanuman, and all i could think was why didn't hanuman teach him properly?

"So Hinduism is a sure step toward Atheism!"

About that one cannot be sure. It is more like Brownian Motion random walk trajectory. kabhi iss paar kabhi uss paar. A lot of BS was allowed to dominate in past. A lot of BS can happen in future.

yar i watched dilli police beat-up two chicks on aaj-tak inspired by tulsi das <img src=(" />

then one woman went to haryana police station and took off her kurta in protest..all on TV (somehow the crew was there)..fortunately she kept her bra on i believe.

apparently she has complained that she was gang-raped but the cops are not registering her complaint. cops say, she is not formally giving her bayan so they cant do much. she tried to hang herselg from a telephone cable on the wall..so the police arrested her and booked her for an attempted suicide <img src=(" />

From the above, it appears it was the sea telling Ram, after Ram had lost his temper with it

Tulsidas allowed his misogynistic impulses show in more than one place in Ramcharitmanas, btw.

The problem I have always had with those is

a. He is pretty nasty and has prob. shaped N.Indian attitudes towards women for generations upon generations

b. that in being so nasty he is inconsistent in context of his absolute reverence for and the centrality in Ram's life which Tulsidas confers on, Sita in his literary conception.

nb:

I believe that is Goswami Tulsidas. Maybe he'd quarrelled with his dharampatni just before penning those lines. :P Or perhaps one should look at the context and figure out in exactly whose mouth those words were placed.

DM yar, there is a lot of rituals and shyte..its about having fun...dont sweat it. Your generation of khatris were not self-respecting angrej babu-wannabes so were not contemptuous of religious rituals and prolly said shyte lie we belive in the philosophy and not the ritual and shyte. the newer generation is more rooted, more confident and with less of a colonial hangover..so get over it and let laddu-maharaj perform mata-ka-jaagran in peace
:D

salim:

I wish you were right. In fact, there were more agnostics in my cohort than in the current generation. The number of people who go to tirath yaatras, vaishno devi and hold chowkies and jaagrans and hold various religious processions is a multiple of what they were in my generation.

Fortunately, they still don't believe in all the bs which is the content of this thread. And thank Ram, Rahim and Jesus for that.

Shah and izuber,

Unlike Islam we do not have final book and we do not beleive in a final prophet. Any amount or revisions are possible in Hinduism. Like Microsoft Windows software it customizable religion. This is why many Hindus call themselves atheist because they know what terrible bad can Hinduism can be turned into if one is a genius misanthropos.

What west understands about Hindu religion's main concept of Karma is probably not how a Hindu would understand if at all. Most of us fumble and try to figure it out ourselves with our own intellect what this or that concept is. For many Hindus there is no such thing as good Karma and Bad Karma. Indeed meaning of doing our deeds based on our understanding of absolute merit of Karma and not bothering of consequence being good or bad, really means we seek Guru to guide us in knowing merit and not think about Good/Bad Karma.

That Good/Bad Karma might impact our future rebirths might very well be an "add on" to main body of verbiage that refers to Karma by name. Who knows? Most Hindus do not know exact verse numbers of various slokas they often quote. There are classes held to teach old ladies and men these stuff if they in thei old age become interested in these mumbo jumbo.

Earliest I knew I want to be atheist is when I had joined new students of ninth year of high school. I was forced to explain my position to a Jain co-student. Rest of my friends just accepted what I was. Most of my friends proabably were already atheist and would not have known that I was atheist unless I was forced to discuss it with the Jain guy. We did not wear our athiesm on sleeves. We did not impose our beliefs on parents and relatives. We just went along with all the Puja Paths and Matra Japs and Bhajans Kirtans and grabbed odd opportunities here and there to say our things.

That does not mean that there are no Hindus of various degrees of beliefs who have been instructed by wrong texts and wrong Gurus. That is why even an athiest (born to Hindu) have to find our Krishnas and fight our Kauravs. agar kuchh kaam ki baat sikha sakte ho tum? to zaroor sikhao. tum bhi aa jao maidan me, ban jao kisi arjun ke krishna.

{"It's unlikely that you would find any Hindu provoked by this. This is because most of them don't believe in this bs, don't even know it exists and don't care to know about it either."}

DM Sahib,
That explains why so many so-called "modern" Hindus prefer to elevate themselves to the label of "atheists." ...and just like extremist born-again nudist zealots they want everyone to disrobe so they themselves can feel comfortable, justified, and vindicated in their own metamorphosis or, as I call it, their mutilation. :D

Not being 'lakeer kay fakeer' is one of the good things about the hindus.

Thank you for a fascinating insight into the treatment of women among Hindus.

The word brahman–derived from the Sanskrit root brmh meaning to grow, to expand, to bellow, to roar. The word brahman refers to the Supreme Principle regarded as impersonal and divested of all qualities. This form of brahman is sometimes designated as nirguna-brahman, brahman devoid of qualities. In contrast there is saguna-brahman, brahman invested with qualities. (See saguna-brahman). Brahman is the essence from which all created beings are produced and into which they are absorbed. This word is neuter and not to be confused with the masculine word Brahma, the creator god. Brahman is sometimes used to denote the syllable Om or the Vedas in general.

In all manners this word equals another well known word "zionism".
