SRINAGAR/JAMMU: Barely three days after the BSF repulsed a major infiltration bid backed by Pakistan Rangers in Samba sector in Jammu, two terrorists who had sneaked in were killed after they ran amok, leaving a trail of death and destruction.

Six people — a photo journalist, two army jawans and three civilians — were killed before the infiltrators were done in after a daylong encounter.

The heavily armed infiltrators — according to IG, Jammu, K Rajendra, they belonged to Lashkar-e-Taiba — first barged into the house of president of the newly constituted Indian National Democratic Party, Hoshiar Singh, at Kali Mandi forests in Samba district around 6am on Sunday. They killed Singh and his wife Shashi Bala and seriously injured their two daughters, Darshana and Bindu, in a shootout.

"After this, the terrorists headed towards the Jammu-Pathankot highway. But seeing an army patrol, they panicked and hid inside the house of one Suresh Singh," said a villager, who was witness to the encounter.

"Suresh wasn't home but the terrorists took Suresh’s wife, two children, mother, brother and sister hostage. The security forces quickly surrounded the house and heavy firing took place."

"Concerned about the hostage’s safety, we stopped the firing about midway," army spokesman Lt Col SD Goswami said. A tenant in the house, Madhu Sharma, was hit during the first round of firing. "She bled to death by the time soldiers got to her," a source said.

An army jawan, Sunil Kumar Dogra, was killed, while a territorial army major, Mukul Chauhan, was injured.

The photo journalist killed was Ashok Sodhi; he worked for the Jammu-based ‘New Excelsior’ and was shot in the temple while trying to take pictures of the encounter
