Minorities and Pakistan

Topic started by cliftonbridge on May 14, 2008 10:29:14 am

I was at the pier last night we were speaking in urdu and looking out to the sea. Suddenly a woman started motioning to us as if she had something to show us. A little bewildered we walked to her and she proudly showed us the moon peeping out of the silhouette of the manhattan sky.

It was nice enough but clearly just a pretext so she could ask us where we were from. I tell her we are pakistani and she says she is from iran ...bahai from iran. I wonder if im supposed to feel a little bad or what.

She immediately reaches out and hugs me and tells me how her family and friends were persecuted in iran and how they migrated to pakistan. Apparently she lived in a little baloch village and the villagers made them all baluchi dresses when they arrived. She says she loves Pakistani's for everything we have done for her community.

Now noone should ever whitewash the minority persecution in Pakistan and it must be condemened. But clearly people are not monolithic in their interactions. Even I did not expect a nonmuslim nonpakistani to have such affection for the people of a small baluch village. We should always condemn the condemnworthy, but maybe we all need to have broader horizons.

Kaal:

It is wrong to link Pakistan or Jinnah to minority problem is in India. Comparison of where minorities feels secure just fuels debate and strengthens hindutva wadis.

Minority problems in India are very Indian. The biggest challenge is to develop leadership out of Muslims Indians, other minorities who have done it, have excelled. Third generation of Parition of Muslim Indians is providing great crop, even out smaller pie due to discrimination.

Many muslim Indians I know are very capable of providing such leadership but for various reasons they do not want to.

Indian system has matured somewhat to allow leaders to take away their "unfair" share whoever you define this "unfair" share.

Cliffs, truth be told you seem to have left many chowkie men jealous by sharing those hugs with that lady. [-X

:D

Cool, chalta, so long as we REALLY don't believe that solutions to our problems lie either in Pakistan or with poor Mr. Jinnah in his grave. That might be the first step toward solving them. :)

:D:D:D nyc !

saadia discrimination exists in every country. We should accept that, but we shouldnt have a one sided view about them.

Abay, in India no one give two shits about pakistan other than when these momentary crackers go off and kill people. the blame is laid on pakistan because of the natural inclination for terrorism among teh pakistani military and political infrastructure. this is nothing new...

Just keep to speaking for Muslims...kaal. Indians like logic as a basis for their arguments. ;)

Cliffs, in India we keep ourselves going by blaming Pakistan for our problems one half of the time and abusing Jinnah for the other half. No problems can actually exist within India itself.

Nobody would acknowledge that minorities might actually feel far more secure and happier (in relative terms) in Pakistan than in India.

A Pakistani text book incites hatred among millions of Pak children for Hindus every day.

Behaving as if Pakistan is a haven of justice and Pakistanis are forced to kill Indians and bomb our religious places to further the cause of justice is a jihadi sentiment not a rational argument.
