Shame

S hame!

Sir: “Whom the gods wish to destroy, they first make mad,” said classical dramatist Euripides centuries ago, and that seems correct given the situation in our country. We the people of Pakistan must be mad, literally, as we have still not figured out which side we stand on in this daily showing of blood and carnage. Mr Ejaz Haider in his column (“Be done with this confusion”, July 8, 2008) pointed to the same madness and indecisiveness of ordinaries and not so ordinaries alike.

No country of the size and population of Pakistan can succumb to this level of confusion, chaos and cruelty where the participants of Lal Masjid congregation pass by the dead and wounded policemen with grins on their faces unless there is something horribly wrong with the collective psyche of the nation. Shame on all that smiled at this horrible attack; and shame on those who trained them to value humanity as such. Shame on those military masterminds of past who empowered them to become what they are today. Shame on the politicians who nurtured and protected them. And of course, shame on me for being part of a nation that can jam the roads (and justifiably so) over a single incident in faraway Scandinavia, but choose to ignore what people do to them in the name of religion.

But the biggest culprits of all are our electronic media anchors, who spread this confusion out of their sheer incompetence or to further their own agenda. Shame on them all. They have chosen not to inform the nation about the actual environment in which this war on terror is waged.
