Quinton Zondervan

I was born in Amsterdam, Holland and grew up in Suriname, South America. I emigrated to the US in my late teens. I’ve always been drawn to South-Asian culture, especially since 40% of the Suriname population is descendent from East-Indian contract workers. I married an Indian, Radhika Nagpal, (we met at MIT) and we still live in Boston. We have one daughter, Jahnavi. I’ve been a writer since I was 8, but decided in college that writing computer programs would make a better living. Still, I find myself composing poems and science fiction stories at the oddest moments, and I can’t help but inflict them on others. I speak Dutch, English and Sranan fluently. I’m proficient in Spanish and currently studying Hindi. I’ve been to India twice, and hope to return again soon. I’m currently the CTO of Clickmarks Inc.

Everyman

My skin is brown
and hairless
Arowak
My lips are swollen
as the Congo
in rain
My eyes are green
as Scotland
dunes
My tongue twists
like Dutch
windmills
The star of David
shines also
for me
And my libido
responds to
saris
I am everyman
and Earth is
my country
